another step towards real freedom......hope next time it will be about changin' even the city center from pretoria to a south african name...and it's just so insulting to see these dutchwhite people in south africa in streets protesting say :"pretoria is pretoria and changin it would undermine their cultural traditions"......as if the people they found there had no cultural traditions....and who ever heard of a place named after mandela or steve biko indenmark, holland or wherever they come from?...
but i tell youno lie = we still have a lot of stupidity to work on: 1- Grahamstown (South Africa), 2- victoria falls(it's such a big shame that recently Zambia and Zimbabwe were fighting over livingston statue instead fighting over the honor tobreak it!!), 3- lake victoria (Uganda and Tanzania),4- franceville in Gabon (anyone know any gabonville in france?), there are so many other...and the best part is when we start changin our names from those that christianity and islam forced us to our real african names, i say let's start with our children (right now african children are being called brad, lopez, diana,.....).
these are a few lines from the link:
-The government, which has made a series of geographic name changes since apartheid ended in 1994, maintains that South Africans should not have to live in cities, towns and streets named after the people responsible for their racial oppression.(100%)
-President Thabo Mbeki on Thursday spoke out in favor of changing names to break with the colonial past. In a speech to parliament in Cape Town, he singled out Grahamstown, named in 1812 after a British army colonel, John Graham, who was known for his brutal suppression of local Africans in the colonization wars. "He didn't only fight the soldiers on the other side, but burnt their fields and killed their cattle, and starved them into submission; he killed them into submission," Mbeki said. "Yet we have a town — Grahamstown — named after him. The question must arise: why do we celebrate a butcher? This place has got a name; it's called iRhini. But we celebrate a butcher!"
1-Emancipate Yourselves From Mental Slavery.2-We\'ve Been Down in Captivity so Long, if We Unite, We Will Be Free(cheer up).3-Back Them Up,Not the Brothers But the one Who Set Them Up(time will tell)(bob marley)

some of the responses in south africa to the name change-
Paulina Mogotlane
I want Tshwane, because it was Tshwane before it was Pretoria. Pretoria only came after.
I come from Pietersburg – Polokwane as it is now. But I live here now, and when I talk to people I say I come from Tshwane – though I don’t know what the word means.
Johanna Mathibe
Pretoria is an old name. Things that happened in Pretoria no longer happen in Tshwane.
We black people are allowed to do business here, have shops. In Pretoria it was very difficult for us to run a business. Today we can do things for ourselves.
I already call it Tshwane.
Motlasti Monene
I think it’s time for a change – it’s been Pretoria for ever, and for me it will be a nice change. Our kids will grow up in a new Pretoria whose name is Tshwane. The name means something to me because I am black.
It’s an African name – it’s going back to our roots. The cost shouldn’t be a problem.
i agree, our roots are important.
Julius Breedt
Pretoria stays Pretoria! You can’t change it. I was born here, my parents were born here - we've been here since the time of Paul Kruger [19th century Afrikaner leader]. If it changes there will be trouble. They are taking our citizenship away.
They are trying to make a black city and this cannot be
lol at this guy , hes threatoning trouble just because africans choose to have their cities called african names, the cheek!:P
Adri Keeve
It’s ridiculous that the name is changing. The money being spent could be used to build houses. It’s just the same as what apartheid did. They say that we brought apartheid but now they are doing the same, just the other way round.
I grew up here. Pretoria is important in history – the whole world knows about Pretoria.
yawn , predictable

Why are these boers still in South Africa? Obviously they're not down with the new South Africa. Maybe they should expand the TRC's scope. To weed out all those who still wish for the good old days of apartheid.
Deport them to Australia some MF where. Or I'm sure they'd be welcome in Atlanta. Saw quite a few there. Nah, maybe they should just go back to Holland.
On the other hand, the woman makes sense, if all the money spent on cosmetic changes does nothing to change the lives of ordinary black South Africans.
