Blue Vein Societies

I was reading through some articles on colorism and intraracial discrimination and there were several mentions of blue vein societies. What happened to these clubs and organizations? Did they just fizzle out? If so, when? Are there still modern versions lurking around (like in New Orleans or something)? Before the flames start, please note, I am not trying to get into any kind of stupid debate, and I am not trying to join, I'm just looking for more info on the subject.
