Im 17 and work as an office junior in a building of 8 people (all older). thing is ive worked here for 2 and half months now and i want to leave already but its for a good cause. i want to go to college i feel ive found my calling which is psychology. im really scared to leave though. i would like to leave at the end of this month as i have family coming over so i can spend time with them then go college in september. i dont no whether to jus leave n never come back or give notice but i know for a fact that they will be funny with me and see me as a time waster. i cant be dealing with funniness for a month. all my friends say dont worry bout it but its ok for them to say because where they all work theres more people so they can talk to someone within work about it i cant theres no one for me to turn to.

what shall i do im rippin my hair out here!!

When I was 17 I probably would have just left and not gone back, but I believe its better never to burn your bridges. You never know you may need a reference from them in the future. Also its a small world imagine going for an interview in 5yrs and coming face to face with an ex college who knew that you had just up and left your employment with out a word-unlikely but you never know.If their funny ignore it, your on to bigger and better ,Good luck in your studies by the way

show some maturity and hand in your notice and explain yourself you never know they may let you leave early they may not but you have to know that in life things doesn't always go the way you want but you have to deal with it. Why can't you spend time with your family after work hours? Have you checked how long your probation period is and what your notice period is within this time?

First of all you need to check your contractual agreement to see what your notice period is.

There is nothing wrong with changing your mind, that's why you are given a probationary period where either party may rescind the arrangement.

It is best practise however to offer your notice within a reasonable time period ( this is probably one month, given your particular situation). I know you are quite young but dealing with "the funniness for a month" will not be that difficult, be professional, just grit your teeth and bear it. You will come out at the other end a stronger person and even if your superiors/colleagues don't say it, they will silently respect you for it.

Dont burn your bridges, who knows your boss might even suggest some type of internship during your holidays from study.

Common sense IS NOT a COMMON THING.

If you've only been there for two and a half months all u need to give them is one week's notice. Just say a space has become available on the course you are interested in. Write it formally and they shouldn't have a problem.

I'd agree with most of those here in advising you to give the required notice. Having been in the post for such a short time they may only wanta short notice period or maybe just a few days depending on the work. Something worth knowing is that if THEY decide that that you don't need to cover the full notice period then they are obliged to pay you for the full period i.e. 'payment in lue of notice'.

In a similar situation I handed in my notice with an accompanying request for a meeting "to discuss how we work through the notice period" In the meeting I basically asked the person in question how they felt I could usefully use this time. (first I made sure I had already tied up all loose ends) by the end of the conversation, they could find no logical reason for me to work the notice period, so they offered to pay me a months salary in lue of notice. SWEET! But it must be the companies decision otherwise they have no obligation to pay it - don't suggest it yourself!

On a second point, a referance is extremely valuable, trying to find a postion without being able to put your last employers down as references just means one more difficuly in finding a job, even if you've been to collage in between. I managed to get a job in the early years by using a referance from my saturday job I had while I was at school.

A month is a worthy price to pay for a reference. It won't make or break your career, but every and any advantage is worth having in the job market. (and the self discipline is never to early to practice - still working on mine )

Good luck whatever you decide
