What does this term mean to you?
Does this term diminish the family unit...to wit the Black Family Unit?
And why is it no more offensive than theterm" baby Momma" or "baby daddy" ?
I would be very interested in your thoughts --
(especially theUK posters because the term "partner" in the US usually refers to homosexual relationships and so is not necessarily relevantto this discussion)

I don't find anything offensive about using partner. In fact I'd rather use that than babby momma or daddy. Only because when you hear the latter its seems to be an indication that there is no unit. More like "this is the man/woman I have had a child with" but not necessarily "this is the one I am in a relationship with and we have a child" or even better "this is my family".
What do you mean by to wit the Black Family Unit ? Is this also a term that is being used?

Pre-marriage, and with my other long-term relationship, I used the term "partner". I used it because "boyfriend" sounded too immature, and "other half" sounded condescending.
I have no problem with the term "partner", and can't see how it can diminish the Black family unit - it's just a term.

I agree with Lady Vee. I see it as a term used for someone who has been your boyfriend or girlfriend for a long time. Many a time people who are 'cohabitating' or someone who you are setling down with. The whole 'gay' thing about partner, I personally don't think so...because whenever you listen to various types of media don't they always use partner as a general term, for speaking to a wide audience, when discussing relationships?. If that is the case i.e. the association of 'partner' with 'gay', it may be no longer. "Gay relationships" amy no longer be 'barstard unions' (i.e. a relationship perceived by society as 'illegitimate' or simply not recognised in the eyes of religious bodies, law and society because they cannnot 'legitimize' their union through marriage/common law union or anything else 'official'like that) as they are pushing for 'gay marriages' everywhere. So soon you will be hearing them say my husband or my wife...if they want to stay in the 'closet', they'll still use my 'partner' , I guess. The word has an ambiguity to it, so can be handy when you are unsure what to 'say'. But I'd associate it with meaning long term, or co habiting, especially with people with whom 'marriage is a 'no no' or a 'grey area'.

@Happy funny you should mention this. I had an experience on Monday with one of my white liberal middle class neighbours (who is married)and he refered to my wife twice as my "partner" and I keept on rebutting both times..."MY WIFE".
This is very political and not necesarily in my neighbours behavior just trendy and picking up what the flavour of the month or fashion or attempting to nuetralise or not judge and putting all relationships in a non-offensive category. Which actually offends me as I am a marreid man as is my wife.
It is about my social status and I resent people trying to slip me into other categories to not cause offense or to normalise others. Back home people refer to you as married period and very often and humoursly so simply assume you are married befcause of your perceived stature. So I was being called married long time before I actually was because in particular culuture all respectable men from respectable famiiles marry.

@Maat - I am old school. I believe that marriage is the ultimate. Anything less than that is just that: less than that.
Not that I have any problems with living together because I dont.....I did that living together thingy before I got married (but not with my husband). But we should call it what it is...a less significant relationship.
as regards the black family unit...that may be more something that is said over here. Im not sure...but what I was trying to say was essentially should we, as a community, do more to uphold the concept of marriage - rather than tolerating all these "lesser" relationships (ie., partners, baby momma, baby daddy etc...)
Like I said its hard for me to use the word partner because it is used here mainly to talk about gay relationships.
