The Department of Transport has recently completed a study in which motorists’ cars were fitted with a “spy device that stops speeding. The satellite-based system monitors drivers’ speeds and applies the brakes or cuts out the accelerator if they try to exceed the speed limit. The trial concluded that the scheme promoted safer driving. What’s your opinion?
a,I am completely in favour of these speed limiters and think they are a great idea. By slowing drivers down they will save lives and make Britain’s roads a safer place.
b, Speed limiters are a good idea but they are not the sole solution to the problem of speeding. The Government will not stop motorists exceeding the speed limit unless it makes drivers understand the serious consequences of doing so.
c, If the scheme is to be successful it must be mandatory for every car to be fitted with a speed limiter. If it remains optional to fit the device, as currently proposed, consistent speeders will simply not bother to fit them.
d, I think that putting technology in control rather than the driver will ultimately prove dangerous. If motorists do not have to think about their speed limit, they could lose concentration, actually leading to more accidents.
e, I find the idea of being tracked in my own car totally unacceptable; being spied on shows a total disregard for my civil liberties.
Personally i couldnt choose between c and e. Answer C, I reluctantly would agree with mandatory measures as this would stop the numbers of people dying each year no doubt. But boy it would mean longer traffic cues and boring driving. Answer E, well it's most definately an infringementof liberty but thats my own selfish opinion and doesnt save lives.
