As demand for the most popular schools rises - and catchment areas in some cases shrink to just a few minutes walk from the school - critics say we have 'selection by mortgage' as house prices within sought after school catchment areas rise sharply.

It really does not matter if you are in the catchment area. The first criteria is, if it's a church school, are you practising the faith? Then it's are there any siblings in the school currently? The catchment area tends to be the final criteria to fill.

House prices are astronomical in apparently good catchment areas, but I've heard of parents whose children still haven't been accepted in the school.

Parental choice is an LEA fantasy! The only thing that helps is to find a school that gives preference to siblings and have at least 2 children so that you are covered!

That's the only thing that's going to help me come October!

Parents can decide to encourage their children to read and then select and find the books. Regardless of the schools.

My personal theory is that the right TWO books per month from 4th grade could prepare a kid to blow away most Harvard graduates by age 18.

We are taught to glorify school too much. Institutional brainwashing. Knowledge is not a ZERO-SUM GAME. For one person to learn more another doesn't have to know less. The schools make GRADES a ZERO-SUM GAME. Only so many A's in a class, only so many B's in a class and some children will compete to death over this nonsense. The kids eventually believe in the grades. I'm better at memorizing useless trash than you are so I must be smarter than you are. ROFL
