i find that honesty is always the best policy...you don't have to duck and hide...it is not what you say sometimes but how you say it...you can tell someone that you are not interesting in talking or not a social person with out hurting their feelings...i understandwhat u are talking bout...cause although i like people & i am a people person, i don't like all/many people...i am an extreme introvert..i tried to get out of it...did not do such a good job at it...lol i have learned through time...that is just my personality...

so to avoid any ducking and dodging people...i am just honest with them...

i am very careful of the company i keep ...and i don't needmany people if any at allin my circle to be happy, i tell people this..people always want to be my friend..i nip it in the bud...especially negative, needypeople...so i will tell a person...i can't be your friend..might sound ugly..but hey...works for me...keeps me from lying..lol avoidance is a living hell...lol

i relate to everything you have said in this thread...

i don't tell people what they want to hear...so i guess i am saying that it is not ok to lie...then you have to lie again tocover the previous one...honesty 1st and all the drama is over and done with...u can move on/live in peace...clp)

The Bible supposedly says:

Thou shalt not bear false witness AGAINST thy neighbor.

The literal interpretation of this would mean you can lie about yourself all you want, and you can lie FOR your neighbor.

Suppose during WWII soem German soldiers were asking you if your neighbor was Jewish. (We'll ignore the race issue for the moment. LOL) You know your neighbor is Jewish but he is lying to the Germans. Do you tell the truth knowing he'll be taken to a concentration camp or do you lie FOR him?

Being too honest is for suckers the way plenty of the White boys play the game. Of course they will crucify you if they can catch you.

"All warfare is based on deception." - Sun Tzu

I lied to IBM about wanting a career with the company and not having a second id card when I quit.

@ Timeline

Uhm have you figured that maybe the guy is just fishing and hoping that you ask him and your plans are similar so one of you can connect your plans? It sounds like he likes ya. LOL

@Everyone

Men you know we lie to keep the women in our life happy. Like when we are asked...

Does this make me look fat?

You wanna say yep BUT, you know that is going tp lead to you being cut off, her pouting, or in some cases her feelings destroyed. So we say yep and wait until one of her g/f's tell her so LOL

Am I heavy or am I hurting you?

We all wanna say yeah when she unexpectedly jumps in our lap and positions the majority of her weight in our stomach so that we cannot get a full breath or some how has positioned her butt to put as much weight on the marbles as she can. Yet we squeak No I am ok..... just to make sure she is still feeling comfortable enough to lay on us

How does it taste?

You wanna say like my sneakers, but instead of destroying her confidence in taking care of you, you bravely continue to swallow the instant oatmeal she is so proud that she made for you..........LOL

Europen culture behaves as tho honesty is for people at the bottom of society.

While I was at IBM they introduced a computer called the Datamaster 23. It replaced the 5100.

http://oldcomputers.net/ibm5100.html

The Datamaster had a bigger screen and 2 8" floppy drives and sold for a few thousand less. Both of these were on a table in an office I had access to. From the documentation there was no way to tell which machine was faster. I assumed the newer one was but I wanted to know by how much. So I wrote two programs to use a benchmarks, a bubble sort and a prime numbers program. I ran them on both machines. The 5100 was almost twice as fast as the Datamaster 23 on both programs.

All of the time I was at IBM I never saw the term BENCHMARK on any documentation. I only heard it when I mentioned it. One time I did and an Indian programmer put his finger to his lips and went, "SHSHSHSHHH!."

On at least two occasions I listened to IBM managers talk about what an ethical company IBM is.

Morality and honesty and ethics are for the suckers at the bottom of the system. It helps keep them at the bottom of the system.

So to make a TRULY honest system we need to distribute more info so more people can recognize more BULLSH!T.

off topic...

Maybe you're reading way too much into this co-worker situation. The nature of gregarious people is to spread happiness to others. He maysee you as having anger management issues. Perhaps he thinks that he reminds you of someone in your past who left you heartbroken, so his continual attempts to be friendly towards you are just a way to help you cope. That can explain his behavior just as well as your self-esteem theory. If you just have to be mean and discriminatory towards him, be honest and tell him that you choose not to associate with him, so all non-essential contact between the two of you should cease.

on topic...

There's never a reason to lie. Humans are social creatures, which in my opinion mean we are meant to interact for our survival. Lying is counter-productive and misleading to others. Ultimately it may cause them to making ill-informed decisionswhich canlead toresentment and retaliatory actions.

Lying is not justified.

I was looking for this...

I just spent a few hours fending off a dude who is soo blatantly trying to convert me to his religion (won't say which one lol) but he has foistored a video on me and rabbited on for ages about the history of his religion and what it means to him and what it made him see and blahdy blahdy blah... Now this fellow knows Im an atheist alreay and I've made it clear that such talk is only fit to make me sleepy, but that is not stopping him oh no. Now he seems more determined to convert and presumably save me grrr

Im running out of lies to tell here!!

There comes a point when you stop being polite and caring about feelings and you gotta be straight rowdy.

LOL @ MT

I was proper getting annoyed. But Im at work and he is a client of my boss... Shouldn't have no need to be speaking to me anyway but for some reason sequestered himself in my office and began babbling as Timeline says largely to himself. At one point I did get annoyed and told him about the history of his religion and our people and he paused, then went right on babbling like it went in one ear and out the other.

Ask me no questions and I will tell you no lies

If we do not have an accurate analysis of the problem, we cannot possibly develop a good strategy to resolve it.

@timeline

I hear that...but if people are aware they can tell by a persons body language they are not interested in convo...

I know sometimes you got to keep people sweet...but if it is too jarring...man...I will just have to tell whether it be boss or co-worker in a polite(ish) way of course to get out my face

Plus if you've seen my screwface...ppl stay away...LOL
