i enjoyed this programme and agrred with his point that reparations does not necessarily require a huge financial pay out but an acknowledgement of what happenened and an attempt to rectify the most negative effects of the legacy that remain today.

as a representative of my ancestors i would be willing to accept an official apology and also a review of the debt situations in africa and the carribean, however, it seems this is wishful thinking, let alone a £7.5 trillion pay out.

if anyone knows if/how we campaign on this issue i would be glad of some info.

I don't think todays generation should be made to pay for something their forefathers have done, however a lot of ppl (white mainly) seem to be in denial or unaware of the problems slavery has caused. Some monument or rememberance day maybe, if payment was to be made then how would it be spent? would it be given to individuals or to the black community as a whole? Also there's the view of 'stop playing the victim' which I don't agree with. I think it's a shame that the victims of slavery were not compensated sooner like when some of them were still alive. But that's just me I could be wrong.

My only comment is Im glad thatour 'Yoof!' have a chance to learn about their History andthe Legacy of the slave trade. No matter how "intergratedyou feel" there will come a day where you will find out more about what our Ansestorswent through. And if you have half a brain you will learn this legacy is still with us today.

They say money can buy you happyness ok! but it sure can feed some hungry bellies and enable us to build a GreatAfrican nation.

Dem tee-fing bloodx!$% can give us our 7.5 Trill, because we need it now!

I feel we need an apology from the Queen for the British involvement in slavery. I'm glad JP Morgan has set a precedence with their albeit miniscule scholarship fund. The high street banks mentioned in today's programme should start similar (more generous) scholarships and through their cultural and diversity networks, plan MORE events for their staff from ALL ethnic minorities along with more community projects (PULL YOUR FINGERS OUT DIVERSITY NETWORK LEADERS!!! MAKE DEMANDS!!!). Managers in these banks should attend compulsory ACCREDITED Diversity courses as they currently fall way short in understanding the problems their ethnic minority staff face. Those slave descendents working for those banks who are aware of their employer's links to slavery in history feel uncomfortable in their day job and feel guilt and shame to contribute to these profit greedy corporates. I know because I was one... I resigned.

Banks - please don't sue me I'm already broke

Definitely compensation is in order and no brothers, being allowed to sleep with white women is not compensation.

Man with 7.5 trillion, even those diasporans who identify their race as black or Caribbean will be tracing back their roots in acknowledgement and celebration of their African roots- damn it maybe the one thing that finally unites us all!!

The one thing I will say though, one thingdisproportionately lacking in the diasporan community is respect. From the way we carry ourselves, from the way our women base their beauty on cosmo, from professionals dating outside to our rappers disrepecting our women, likewise any man that would sell his own kind to another doesn't deserve respect. I mean, if a man sold you one of his own kind to you for trinkents, would you treat your purchase as human?

The one thing the show did not touch on which I believe is very important is in comparisson to all the other slavery which has gone on, i.e Germans enslaving the Jews, how many slaves had their names, identity, religion, culture systematicallyerased. Yeah the jewsmay have been slaves, but they still knew they were Jews.

Dr Beckford,

The direct descendant of the Prosperous Slave Owner, as featured in last weeks BBC 2 documentary on the Slave Business, was absolutely brilliant.

I was very impressed with the details of his presentation of the arguement and also the facts that he drew up. His idea of assessment of the financial compansation was inspired and overall very little to complain about it was spot on.

The only critizism was that it should have featured the week before the Live8 concert and G8 Summit, just like the very late Night programes on the German involvement and genocide in Namibia in the early 20th Century (tonight BBC2 23:20 Hoursconfused3)or the King Leoapolds Congo.

P.S Great Posts from

That WAS an interesting programme for sure, I didntknow thegermans apologised for their part in slavery and the queen apologised to thoseafrican tribe of people, but I knew about the banks being bulit offof slave traders and other affiliates.

I think their are three parts to this programme.

I didnt believe one of those guys in the meeting with top black figures that he thought we deserved reparations but didnt know who should be paid....................errmmm all of the African and Carribeannations in debt me tinks???All of the traceable people whos familyancestors where affected also me tinks???

Personally, i think if Britain does at least apologises its not going to be genuine. Its just going to be a result of public pressure and exposure and that theywant to come across as a nation sensitive to its multi-cultral society.

I think you will get some hardcore black panthers(like me) saing sory aint good enough............cos tome dat naaa wok! bout sarry???

ISAY GIVE US SOME GREEN SO WE CAN BULID UP OUR OWN SHIT!!!
