I am not sure if this is media hysperia but I think there must be some truth in it..why the stigma? are we afraid that we might have diseases that might be found if we donate blood? do you know how many black children die because no one is ready to donate their blood or organ?
I cant talk of America but I know this is a problem and seems no one is ready to talk about it
Once again we are showing our real picture on how we contribute in killing our own
nb: If its a media hysteria then I apologise for all the above but I will get back on this once I get more data..otherwise opinions are welcome

Sorry, but becausepeople havenever given blood it doesn't mean "We're killingour own". The last thingwe need is someone like you trying to place burden on others.

Yes, it hurts and I think they take all you blood. Have you heard of that famous male nurse called DRACULA?

Hey @soar85, giving blood does not hurt at all. They will take about a pint, make sure you have a good lunch or breakfast beforehand and drink plenty of fluids afterwards. Not being blood or organ donors does not mean that we are hypocrites. What we should remember is that for most of us, unless we have a realtive or friend that has needed an organ transplant, we don't know how vital it is for us to support each other in this manner.
In my career, I have had the misfortune of burying two of my patients, black, bright teenage boys with Acute Myloid Leukemia. Both did not have suitable donors. Whether these deaths could have been avoided if our people would realise that there are no nurses called DRACULA, we are not going to suck out your blood, and we die and our perfectly good organs that could help the thousands of black people out there, go to waste. The ACLT, has tried to raise awareness in our community, as have some radio stations, still the response from my people has been extremely disappointing. Did you know that a caucasian person has a 1 in 5 chance of getting a suitable bone marrow donor, that figure rises to 1 in 100 000 for Africans. If that is not food for thought, I do not know what is, I do not have the figures for kidney donors to hand, but they are also quite dire.

The last market research seminar I took part in revolved around youngblack people and blood donation. Some of the factors young black people said prevented them from donating blood were...
fear mostly generated by old wives tales and superstition
a lack of mobile unitswhich would make blood donation more accesibleto potential donors
the fact that one can now be approached to be a bone marrow donor after donating blood
lack of MONETARY incentives!!!!!
