@Chantel&facteygal
I hear what your saying also and i agree. But I thought id post a thread to let people be aware and keep up to date o th different siutations and reasons why this practice is ritual and necessary for some people. You can always pickup and learnsomething you've heard and see before, dont you agree?

The programme was not too bad,it could have done with being about half an hour longer.
One of the things that was missing for me was a Black person coming on camera and talking about how and why they bleach,but I imagine such a person would be hella hard to find.
Still I think if the director had the luxury of time she could have gotten pictures from dermatologists about bleaching damage, which could have been intercut with the footage, Also if I were directing this I would have had people lurking round the skin-lightning sections in these beauty shops theninstruct them totake surreptitious pictures of peoples skin and I would have aired them,interms of the legal implications of that, the actual features of the person could be pixelated,its the skin that would have been the focus.
Thought it was brave of the Asian girl to come on and talk about it even though she did sound a bit of a prat at times,but at the same time I felt sorry for her because I know how BRUTAL that fair skinned pigmentocracy is in Asian culture.
Anyway this just a general overview of the show,not an in depth analysis.
I aint asking for nothing,just open the door and i\'ll take it myself-James Brown.

Forget all that to each its own crap, bleaching your skin is stupid. If you have badly discolored skin and you want to even your complexion, understandable but just to be lightskin is dumb.

yes.., true, but do not forget that many of us have been taught to hate our skin, the darker the uglier, apparently. And what have we as African folk done to dispell that myth, nothing. The truth is, we perpetuate it. We do not embrace our beauty and laugh at those that are not as yellow as we would like them to be. The very dark amongst us are made up to look like freaks. Look at Alek Wek, striking looking woman, when she is not wearing canary yellow eyeshadow. I think we should reclaim our beauty and define ourselves by our own terms, rather than those that have been set for us. It is not only Africans of the diaspora that actively encourage pigmentocracy, I have an aunt back home, a once beautiful woman, whose cheeks are now green as a result of abusing skin lightening creams. And who manufactures those creams encouraging us to hate ourselves more? We should reclaim our beauty, we are diverse, as is our beauty.

Your right, not to get back on the complexion topic everyone hates so much but what you said is true and we do perpetuate it "pigmentocracy". Amoungst the youth especiallyI hear darkskin is ugly orgood and bad hairadleast once a day. Even the darkskin people I know have excepted the idea that darkness is ugly but some how they are the exception. Bleaching your skin is not the answer though because once you bleach, you can't go back. I can't believe they actually have a show about it, its probably in europe somewhere because I never heard of ITV.

I thoguht the show was interesting but should have been longer, because it seemed rushed. The asian girl was brave to do it and I think the pigmentocracy idea is discussed more in the open in the asian community, whereas I think some black people try and brush it under the carpet and pretend that it doesnt exist. Which is proabably why she had a hard time finding a black person who bleaches.
