They have 6 lists of 21 names each. They alternate the storm names on each list between male and female names, and the first name of each years' list alternates between male and female. Each year they use a different list, and at the end of the cycle they start over. If they run out of names in a particular year they move to the letters of the greek alphabet. This has not happened yet, but this year is pushing it. (Only 4 more names left, but we still have a couple months to go in this year's hurricane season.) Every so often a storm causes so much damage that they "retire" that name forever. For example, from the 2004 list, the names Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne will be retired because of the amount of damage they caused, and this year the names Dennis, Katrina, and Rita (which is about to rip a new hole into southeast Texas and cause our gas prices to go up as much as a dollar/gallon) will most likely be retired.

I should probably clarify my earlier post. The way the names are selected is dependent upon what part of the world the storm forms in. The above rules are for the North Atlantic. Other areas include the East, Central, and Western Pacific, West, North, and East Australia, etc. More info about storm names can be found here. You can also see the names that have been retired.
