New legislation starts today allowing the police power to take fingerprints and DNA without consent from those arrested but not charged. In response to this, Adrian McAllister, ACPO spokesman on DNA and fingerprint retention and Assistant Chief constable of Lancashire Constabulary, said:
"ACPO welcomes the new legislation. It will bring considerable benefits to the criminal justice process by providing the police with the power to take fingerprints and DNA samples after arrest. This important piece of legislation comes at a time when the police service is striving to make maximum use of forensic evidence to detect crime.[/align]
