Desperate quake survivors turn to looting

AP , MUZAFFARABAD, PAKISTAN
Tuesday, Oct 11, 2005,

Shopkeepers clashed with looters yesterday and hungry families huddled under tents while waiting for relief supplies after Pakistan's worst earthquake razed entire villages and buried roads in rubble. Death toll estimates ranged from 20,000 to above 30,000.

The UN said over 2.5 million people were left homeless by Saturday's monster 7.6-magnitude quake, and doctors warned of an outbreak of disease unless more relief arrives soon.

With landslides blocking roads to many of the worst-hit areas, Pakistan's army was flying food, water and medicine into the disaster zone. International relief efforts cranked into action, with flights carrying rescue teams and supplies arriving in Pakistan.

Eight US military helicopters from Afghanistan arrived in Islamabad with provisions. Washington pledged up to US$50 million in relief and reconstruction aid, US Ambassador Ryan Crocker said.

Most of the dead were in Pakistan's mountainous north. India reported more than 800 deaths, and Afghanistan reported four.

In the shattered streets of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan's portion of divided Kashmir, a reporter saw shopkeepers scuffle with people trying to break into shuttered businesses. They beat each other with sticks and threw stones, and some people suffered head wounds. No police were in the area.

Residents said looters were also targeting deserted homes, and even gas stations. Survivors lacked food and water amid little sign of any official coordination of relief in the devastated city of 600,000, where at least 11,000 people died.

About 2,000 people huddled around campfires through the cold night on a soccer field on the city's university campus, where most buildings had collapsed and hundreds were feared buried in classrooms and dormitories.

On the soccer field, Mohammed Ullah Khan, 50, said a few biscuits handed out by relief workers were his only food for three days. His wife, who suffered a fractured leg, was wrapped in a yellow quilt beside him.

Their three-story home had collapsed in the quake. His family of 10 people survived because they were on the top floor, which crashed to the ground.

A doctor, Iqbal Khan, said there was a serious risk of outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia if drinking water and other relief supplies do not arrive quickly.

"These people feel as if there is no one to take care of them," he said.

Take note ofhow almost every sentence in this article is saturated with a sad tear-jerking tale of desparation, survival, and human triumph.

I wonder willAl-Jazeera demonize them like the U.S. press demonized the Blacks of New Orleans who had to loot basic necessities under the same conditoins?

Will Asian stories of rape, murder, and mayhem reach Western shores?

Perhaps their own governments will impose a "shoot to kill" martial law in the land toend the looting and lawlessness.

We shall see.......

Bele

I agree with you, it's basic nature to preserve one's self by any means necessary.
If faced with the same situation I'd do the same thing.

But I find it interesting how not only thier own media, but even the foreign and American media doesn't seem to be in too big of a rush to judge and condemn Asians for doing the same thing they were shooting Black men for just a month ago.

They're depicted as human victims overcoming a terrible situation.

We were depicted as animals who were taking advantage of a terrible situation.

They do the same thing when it comes to international aid and relief.

When they bring aid to an African nation they love to show footage of people rushing the trucks ripping open grain and fighting eachother.
They showed no such pictures of the desparate mobs in Iraq and Afganistan when the U.N. brought aid and food into these countries.

Good question. Haven't seen anything like that on TV so far.

We can also talk about the lack of coverage of this disaster compared to Katrina in the UK. For one, there are more pakistani's in the UK then US ex-pats ( 70,000 pakistani's in bradford lost relatives) and the death toll is far far greater 30,000 compared to just over 1000.

But there only filthy poor muslims, so who cares. Right?

We can pick holes in everything when it comes to the media. All I know is that i have to somehow get into it, cos the power its weild is James Bond Villian level

Well, the mediaaren't going to make the same mistakes this time. I still cannot help but feel as if African Americans were treated as if they were more deserving of their disaster. We will see completely different spin this time.

Because they are Asians, they wont be portrayed as barely containing their "animalistic and destructive" tendencies...althoughtheir situation is as desparate. Asian influence in UK news industry will simply not allow it.

I am sure the Pakistani government will not treatits people with the inhumane loathing Bush showed the people of NO.

If sex by force is not proved, this woman can be charged with "zina" - sex outside of marriage. About 60% of women injails have been prisoned as a result of Hudood laws.

@TPOTF, I must concur with you on that issue... but that can of worms is a whole new thread unto itself. The treatment of women there galls me to no end.

I revise my statement to say: I don't think the Pakistanti government would show as much OVERT inhumane loathing as Bush did. Also, there is no way Pakistan has the resources that Bush had to get comprehensive aid deployed. It'll be interesting to see if all different religious fractions are treated equally.

Bottom line, watch the difference in coverage between the two events.

Just goes to show that beneath the veneer of 21st century civilization, people will do anything to survive (asOmaar stated).

If/when the Thames Barrier failed, we'd see the same thing in London:
