Why is it that everywhere in the world black people form a poor underclass? Why are we always lagging?

Matriarchal culture, the women discourage left brain thinking in their children.

Creating new technology requires imagination and right brain thinking, but learning, understanding and using known technology does not. Most of the experts never come up with anything new. Most of what has been going on in microelectronics in the last 20 years is merely implementing mainframe electronics in smaller, cheaper forms. But that smaller, cheaper has revolutionary effects on society.

How often do you hear women say technology is BORING? Mathematics is BORING. Emotions matter, cold calculation does not. When we go up against people more in the habit of cold calculation there is a tendency to loose.

I was near you I'd high five you! I spent an entire semester on the Hemispheres of the Brain and cognizant processes and I never made this connection, one of my specialties is Sociology and I got into Learning Psychology in graduate Studies and I never bridged the two. Matriarchal culture and the Brain....

Interesting observation that the matriarchial culture has stifled technological growth in the black/ African community. But aren't the arabs patriarchial in their mentality and they are NOT advancedeither? Middle eastern women arebarely allowed to think for themselvesso their society is definitely patriarchial and they sure aren't advanced.The luck of having oil reserves in their countries is what has made them rich and most of thetechnology used to get it comes mostly from others eg the US.

If we follow on with this notion of the matriarchial mindset you could argue that the biggest downfall of the black community in thediaspora (USA, Caribbean etc...)is thelack of MALE role models and fathersfor young black men- manywho are brought up with just a mother and have no male role model- so if we use this theory maybe the matriarchial mentality is rooted in their upbringing so they useonly the left side of their brain thusstifling innovation!!confused3

While I think this matriarchial-theory could explain part of the reason in maybe the African continent, unfortunately when we are talking about blacks outside of Africa I think the problem is more deep rooted in the mindsets of many in the black community who have not yet broken from mental slavery in the diaspora. I can say this of many in the USA who seem to continually accept being a buffoon for the white massa'. It is "cool" to act like a buffoon, a gangsta, a thug or hoodlum- not so cool to get an education and a career. The people with these mentalities have accepted their fate passed down generation to generation from the massa'who intended for them NOT to get an education. Now the education is available- it's as if it shouldn't be used. The slave mentality has also manifested itself in family and relationships- people weren't supposed to have a proper family, marriages weren't allowed on the plantations so it has continued 150 years later with some black men having 10 baby mamas. All raceshave irresponsible men but lets be realistic- the situation is dire in the black community compared to others. That's just the fact- whether we like it or not. More than 65% of black children in the USA are born out of wedlock. You do the math.

A couple of years ago CNN had a feature of race and the education system. Black kids in majority black schools felt alienated if they got good grades because it wasn't "cool"..to be part of the group they had to slack off>>>>slave mentality.

Untilthe buffoons like Ying Yang twins, Nelly, Lil Jon and others stop churning out garbage for young people to listen to...we will continue to see a generation of misfits and the cycle will continue from the streets to the media, then the mediaback to the streets.A lot of young people esp.in the ghettos who have no fathers watch these clowns and accept this as their fate, thus the cycle continues.

The matriarchial mentality notion may be a contributor toblacks lagging behind andIf that was the only issue-there would be more hope to rectify the problem. UnfortunatelyI think the slave mentality has got a lot more to do with it. Until the mental slavery has broken- the future doesn't look bright.

Technological development is something that builds on itself and it changes the culture and educational system in the process. Plus in every culture there are people who resist change and must be dragged along.

The technological developmentt in Europe and the US in the 18th and 19th centuries required iron to make steel. The improved metallurgy made it possible to make better tools, better instruments and better weapons. I am not aware of significant iron deposits in Arab territory. Brains aren't all that matters, resources are necessary also.

And things have changed more since WWII. People like Einstein, Oppenheimer, Ford, Freud, Marx, etc., didn't grow up being constantly bombarded with crap from television and radio. Before 1910 I bet color pictures in newspapers and magazines weren't common. How many kids who have engineers, doctors and lawyers for parents are told that stuff is garbage and even better get explanations of why it's garbage? Not just told things with no explanations. Explanations engage the left brain.

This "do as I say and don't ask questions" child rearing discourages mental activity.

I have two comments:

First, I do not think matriarchal thought has anything to do with it. As already expoused, Arabs are some of the most devolved people on the planet, yet are patriarchal. Our greatest classical Black civilizations (Egypt, Sumer, etc.) were matriarchal. There are scores of surviving papyri from Egypt detailing themathematical rigor in their studies, where they mastered irrational numbers, solving simultaneous equations, and of course, the physics needed for efficient pyramid building.

Secondly, you mentioned that technology builds upon itself, where Europe and the US had iron to make steel, which made better weapons, so forth and so on. West Africans were making steel centuries before Europe and the US, where the quality and efficency (2 steps as opposed to 3 steps) was not matched until the Carnegie era (early 1900's).

[line]Mez, after I read his words it really struck a chord, I had been looking at the Left/Right Hemisphere in regards to Childhood Development in education and although this theory put out isn't set into stone, it can be accounted as one of the many variables that can explain why as a group we have become so complacent.

When a parent prvides a deeper explanation of actions, consequences and phenomena you begin the process of brain tendencies, critical thought and preferences. If a Child hears that Math and Science is boring from the person closest to them they begin to take on that opinion. If you always apply Inductive reasoning opposed to deductive reasoning you will turn out an emotion driven person. Doctors are suppose to be compassionate whereas an engineer builds out of a sense of discovery and adventure, look at the Atomic Bomb as an example.

Matriarchal Culture as he puts it is one variable in the explanation.

There has to be a series of Common denominators as to why this is so prevalent. My bias is Sociology, Culture. We are a Diverse Group in many cultural regards but share a similar experience with either Slavery, Colonialism (which was slavery that didn't involve kidknap) The trauma, the fact that many of our Systems to get ahead are blueprinted off of people that took advantage of us. Culturally we have been stagnant due to outside interference, starved, divided and overall conquered.

Umbra talked about Matriarchal Culture which in my view is one part of the equation. I think the fact that we the oppressed have become a consuming class and do not produce hardly any of the Luxury items we so desire is a big part of the problem. Our Conspicuous consumption IMO is the catalyst.

If we produced things like cars, airplanes, Rail roads, Roads, Electric Utilities, Cell Phones, Jewelry and other goods, we would be far better off. When you look at OPEC countries you have a bunch of people who allow outsiders to dig, pump, barrel,price and refine important natural resources. If we got our hands dirty and had our own scientist, producers and responsible governments then this situatio would change radically. Culture, if there is a good governing bodyt in place can be changed in time. Look what China has been able to accomplish in just 50 yrs time with over 1 billion people.
