(Nigerian) African American college student missing for a week
by Karen E. Pride, Chicago Defender
October 20, 2005

Police launched a criminal investigation Wednesday into the disappearance of a 21-year-old Illinois State University student who hasn't been seen since she rented a movie nearly a week ago.

Police in Normal said they haven't yet concluded foul play was involved in the disappearance of Olamide Elizabeth Adeyooye, an African American senior from Berkeley in suburban Chicago.

But new evidence and interviews with friends, family and others point to a possible crime, police said.

"The signs lead us to believe there very well could have been a crime committed," said Lt. Mark Kotte.

One of her oldest friends, Samantha Troha, told the Chicago Defender she spoke with and upbeat Adeyooye that same evening.

"I've known her since fourth grade and we went to elementary and high school together, said Troha, 21. "She seemed fine when we talked."

Adeyooye's educational focus is clinical lab science, Troha said, and she planned on going back to Chicago after graduation doing some internship.

"She is a very fun-loving person. Everyone who meets her just falls in love with her," said her friend.

That fun-loving side was evident in the last entry Adayooye made to her weblog Saturday.

It read in part: "A woman of high caliber. I am a senior at ISU, Labortory Science major and minor in Biology. Yes, I proudly admit that I am a science geek and I have been for years... So, It's my last year of college and it's all about living it up… My name is Olamide, Ola-me-day. It sounds french, I am starting to love my name…I enjoy moving at my own pace. I value self honesty. Hugs and kisses to just about everyone. I like taking naps.

Police had considered the disappearance a missing-person case until a search on Wednesday turned up personal items belonging to Adeyooye near her off-campus apartment, Kotte said.

He said evidence collected at her apartment and interviews also led police to suspect possible wrongdoing, but declined to elaborate.

Adeyooye was last seen renting a movie about 9 p.m. last Thursday at a store in Normal, according to a Web site about the case posted by the 20,000-student university.

Her family reported her missing Saturday after she missed classes and her weekend job as a waitress.

Police say her green 1996 Toyota Corolla with Illinois license plates is also missing.

Kotte said canine and aircraft searches will continue and that the FBI and Illinois State Police will help with the investigation.

ISU police Capt. Don Knapp said his department receives occasional missing person reports, but Adeyooye's disappearance is the first case to be elevated to a criminal investigation since two ISU coeds were killed in unrelated incidents in the 1970s.

This report contains material from Jan Dennis of the Associated Press.

Chicago is a very scary city to live in, especially Westside area.

Too many murders and crime.

Since I came here in May, there have been at least 12 murders within 400 meters from where I stay (around Garfield Park).

I was jumped on twice by two different group of boys/men and one guy really fought me on the street. Thank GodI wasn't weak for him. I slammed him even though he bit me on the chest.

The black on black crime is very high. Even old men talk about how they "whoop" their "enemies" openly.

It is shameful but I believe that the parents have FAILED these crime-exposed kids/young men.

I stay with a family andI have seen how their parents let them get lazy, most of the time give them money for no major reason. The same kids won't even do their laundry nor clean the house when they are asked to.

Their mom is on crack cocaine, of whice she uses the government aid for her 4kids to buy.

Thank God for their kind Granny, whom they all stay with. She though has a hand in spoiling them, especially her daughter.

Any black person here will agree with me that without the Grannies, a whole lot of black families will be in real deepmess today- from homelessness to hunger.

One thing I hate is the "white T-Shirt" mentality. Because it is cheap to buy, these kids/ yound men and some times men, will rather choose to throw away a used white shirt and buy another one for $2 instead of washing it up.

It is shameful that most of the drug dealers and weed hustlers don't have any future ambition or plans order than what they do. Most of these guys use their girlfriends to buy expensive cars andSHAMEFULLY live with their moms or grannies.

There needs to be revival among the black community. The best way to start is by engaging the kids that are 11 years down. The older ones can join if the choose as they can't be forced.

I feel very sad when I see all these wide spread problems facing black people.

Since I came here 5 months ago, I have tried my best to love everyone, especially the young kids. I have talked to them on daily basis on how to behave and how I was brought up back home in Nigeria. Out of all the kids, only one seem to have gotten the message and I am very glad. His older brother, who is 14 has been to jail 3 times in 1 month for selling weed on the street corner. He too smokes weed and behaves MADLY in public places.

I have been to Sam's Club in a Latino community and he almost drove me nuts.

I nearly didn't care that the police was around, I tried to beat/push him away when he kept on pulling the shopping cart and throwing goods around the store.

These kids and older black brothers and sisters need our help, especially when it comes to food.

We, Africans need to get closer to them and help in anyway we can.

You will notice I didn't write much about the black ladies. That's because so far, I will score them 9/10 when it comes to behaviours, especially towards their fellow black people.

Most of the boys/men need serious help.

Before you argue, this is limited to the poor black areas and if you don't live or been around these places, I suggest you go and leave there for at least 2 weeks.

I have to admit that as winter closes in, I am getting scared because I know that as most people won't have time to have fun unlike summer, they will start occuping their minds with all kinds of evil thoughts. Most of these guys need to hustle to survive and with that they can go dirty among themselves.

Also, the alleys are getting dark and lonely and if someone/people are beating you up, nobody will come to your rescue in the cold.

The police behave like Nigerian police. They respond to calls right after your ass has been dealt with.

They only respond faster if you tell them gun is inolved. They even delayed on the scene with one of the guys that were shot at the park before the guy gave up the ghost. He was still alive for more than 15 minutes and the ambulance was there.

The reason I have stayed here is that I made good money during summer but most importantly, I feel at home here more than any other places I have been.

Few haters hated me but a lot of people loved me and I will love to settle in this area one day if only the black on black violence and crime goes down.

For now, I got to take myself back to Kentucky.

Okafurworld,

Here, I was about to give you props on highlighting a missing black woman..and give you advice on where to place thi snews fro greater reach...and then....you second post is full of typical condescension towards poor people....* almost as if the purpose o fthi sthread was to point out the shortcomings o fthe people in the area you live in

cme on man...there are poor areas of Nigeria where the EXACT same things you mentioned occur.....please spare me the "In africa, we are raised different" speech you gave those little boys....you are in the hood......whatever normal problems that people have is magnified in the ghetto because of poverty and ignorance...that's true anywhere in the world....

stop patronizing people

and if the community you stay in, and the house you stay in are so bad...then MOVE....

see, that is the real point o fyour frustration...you are mad at YOURSELF because even with all of your good training and morals..you have to live in the same place...

apparently you have not reached level where you are financially able to live elsewhere....so your hatred is not targeted at people in your surroundings..but at yourself.....

* THUMBS DOWN on this thread...

Hey DtotheJ,

You are right in some ways. I might not be financially ok to live elsewhere but that is not the reason while I stayed here since summer.

Refresh your mind that I said I made a lot of money during summer. I could have moved.

The major reason I stayed here is that it is close to my supplier and I can easily get down there an buy my products.

That, I cannot do on a daily/weekly basis if I where in KY. Sourcing is one of the reason I came to Chicago.

I try to cut my coat according to my size. I cannot just move to somewhere else without considering the cost on my business.

Anyway, I am sorry if I hurt you from what I wrote. I know some black brothers will be mad at me for saying the truth.

nah..not hurt more disappointment....a your comments and condescending tone

I'm an immigrant also.....we lived in poor areas when we first moved here also

....and you described the hood......in any country....including your home country....what are the poor urban areas in Nigeria, okafur?

how would a foreigner describe that section of Nigeria if they lived there for a few months?

And what I meant by moving is....if you hate area where you live....why not move to another part of Chicago..(you made so much money, right?) You clearly understood that Ididn't mean to move out of chicago....but to a safer part...

there is ahint of overt condescension at times here....that is clear as day....to new members...

a thread about missing woman....turns into diatribe about conditions in the hood.....

Hood is hood in any part of the world - poor but my point is that the black on black crime in the U.S. is enormous.

People get robbed in Nigeria but the gangs don't really kill themselves that much like here.

There is too much violence coupled with lack of respect for one another in these communities unlike in Nigeria.

I don't like to defend something that is defenseless but you as an immigrant knows that black people in the U.S. don't understand what it is like to respect their elders or strangers unlike in most African countries.

Remember that I said that I stayed here because it is close to my supplier and I made money here too plus I love these people and I felt ok no matter what but no winter is here and things are changing so I got to move back to KY.

As an Igbo man, I had to venture out their for my means of survival but it is threatened now by winter because people don't really come outside to buy stuff at the park so I got to move again.

Hopefully, I will depend and survive on my website. I am happy the new one is picking up in sales.

Thanks though for your comments.

I can see that you have chosen to paint Nigeria black and not just argue with my post.

Do you have Crime Watch for every other country or just Nigeria? I will like to get them becauseI like reading news.

Anyway, as I said hood is hood in any part of the world and things happen no matter where.

I will leave the thread for you to continue. I got to go clean up and start parking so take your time.
