I was watching TV and saw something briefly about the Amputees in in Sierra Leone. What kind of animals chop off the hands, feet and fingers of Women, children and Men? Where is the value for life at and how come no one is talking about this?

I mean, how the hell does someone justify this?

How can you build a nation without feet, hands and better yet, confidence.....

Children are the future but how can they take control without limbs which to walk about?

Can a man really Father his children when he has no hands which to hold them?

I mean, our people do it to each other yet no one cries foul, we only blame whitey when in all reality we are literally handicapp one another. A union of States that only fight their populations but never fight for a brother in need anymore.

Masai....WE have been talking about it, we HAD talked about it....and TALKING have we done.....but it seems African life as before, during slavery and colonialism, nobody gives much of a damn.....even some Africans themselves buried in their Korans, Bibles, Torans etc, are not THAT repulsed by this images of ourselves. THAT i believe is one ofthe reason that this kinds of things can still happen in Siera Leone, Liberia, Congo etc.....

Its all about Africans putting a HIGHER value in their own lives before we can stop this kinds of evils from happening.

I think you can tell by how quick we are to lower ourselves by the Birmingham riot issue........even after those stunks have murdered more than 2 Africans, you still find black people being APOLOGETIC and calling for PEACE and CALM even though Asians are not interested in either of those.

But i have hope......a few weeks ago i haddinner with a brother from Sierra Leone, him and his organisation are very much WORKING in helping their country recover from this.......they are running community networks, creating jobs etc......the war has left a devastation unimaginable....but at least there are people there working to help themselves.....you wouldn't hear about it in your CNN or ABC news......after all, its Africans doingit for themselves, i guess thats just too ilogical isn't it?....

Mez, I hear what you are saying! Its just unfathomable how any group of people can perpetuate such horrors on one another as this amputation rudeness. I also saw a photo journal of this same situation in Sudan. It is beyond comprehension really.

I'm glad to hear about the Brothers and Sisters doing great things for that Nation! We can't depend on our enemy to report for us. We have a world Black press and we have to support them with our dollar votes and speak up on wrongs pushed by us on us!

I was reading one woman's account of how the Soldiers threatened to kill her and other amputees so that they can clear their path of savagery!

This one issue has me a bit shaken because I've seen people shot, stabbed and beat senseless...., but never amputated intentionally and systematically as a means of terror.

This lack of respect for life is disheartening! It gets worse...Unlike yourself, many others outright deny it. I sat in the presence of this guy from SL and he denied any wrong doing in his country. When I mentioned the Kanye West Song he became strangely silent. We need to be honest and speak loudly to each other on situations like this.

I see people talk about Rap music, American Black Comedies, Jamaican recklessness and Nigerian 419 scams...but no one is talking about respect for life issues like this.

Its human narure....as hard as that might be for us to fathom, but this is what happen when all rules of law breaks and you are left with poverty and no hope for the future.

I was glad to hear that as well......they make their own clothes, foods etc....i think its a fantatstic idea and we are supporting it with the little we have.

Like you say, its a means of terror...most of these acts are committed by youths who are drugged by this corporate armies....its not like they wake up sober one day and decides to impact this sufferings in their own communities. Its all a products of useless civil wars over resources, and in the case of Sierra Leone, its the diamonds.

This lack of respect for life is disheartening! It gets worse...Unlike yourself, many others outright deny it. I sat in the presence of this guy from SL and he denied any wrong doing in his country. What can i say....DENIAL is the greatest antidote......perhaps when so many of us gets too hopeless, we find that denying that this is happening is the only way we can cope......well, at least thats what makes sense to me anyways.

I'm interested in hearing firsthand accounts. We usually have people come to Mass and talk about these affairs but people have been really silent on this issue. The silence is a crime IMO.

Ask the infamous

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

http://www.ohchr.org/english/

Their track record so far is slightly far from getting at least 1 star approval with all the haps going on with our refugees. But they can be squeezed to do the right thing with proper attention.

Sierra Leone’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Freetown/Brussels, 20 December 2002: Sierra Leone’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is a vital part of the strategy for making the country’s still fragile peace permanent. It must start serious work, however, if it is to avoid losing the confidence of civil society and international donors.

In a new briefing paper, Sierra Leone’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission: A Fresh Start?*, the International Crisis Group (ICG) examines the progress of this important transitional justice mechanism, which is one of two (the other is the Special Court) established to deliver justice for crimes committed during the brutal eleven year conflict that ended this year and to reconcile a war-torn nation.

It finds that there are still serious problems with management issues, funding and, in particular, the performance of the commissioners and its partner, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

ICG Africa Program Co-Director Fabienne Hara said: "The TRC must simply start fulfilling its mandate. This mainly depends on the commissioners themselves. They must put forward a strategic operational plan and follow through. It is significant that statement takers have been sent out this month to begin collecting stories from all citizens who wish to come forward, but this is just a first step".

Funding has been a severe problem for the TRC from the start. Donor fatigue, poor fundraising efforts by the TRC and OHCHR and management difficulties all contribute to a major shortfall.

ICG West Africa Project Director Comfort Ero said: "The institution needs to be revitalised so that the donors can stop playing "wait and see" games and start contributing funds to this critical process. Commissioners need to communicate about their work in order to help fundraising. Rather than plead penury, they must demonstrate their capacity to deliver. The commissioners, especially those that are Sierra Leone nationals, need to stand up for the TRC and make their voices heard if they feel the process is not progressing as it should".

Civil society also must be brought back into the process. It is needed to assist with education, to act as a watchdog and to encourage popular participation in the TRC. Unfortunately many civil society leaders feel betrayed by the current process and are increasingly apathetic about the ability and will of the TRC to reveal the truth and heal a divided nation. This is starting to change and improve as the TRC reaches out more, but efforts need to continue.

Plus amputees are organizing with the help of human rights groups. Again it seems like the money is not there.
