For those of you who have African or Caribbean parents or parents from any other ethnic minority, but were born and raised in Britain.....
What do you consider yourself to be?
I get quite confused when it comes to this. I could call myself Nigerian; but I cannot speak the language, have only been there for a total duration of 2 months (in the whole of 23 years), so therefore am not familiar with the country. I only know what my vague memory tells me or what my parents tell me. And besides, when I tell a Nigerian I am Nigerian, they laugh in my face as if I'm talking rubbish. I was born here and have lived here all my life, so identify with this country a lot more. However, if I told somebody I was British, they'd tell me thatI'mnot British because I'm Black.
I would love to call Nigeria Home, but I simply cannot because it's not my home-it's my parent's home. If I ever were to go and reside in Nigeria,I wouldn't be going 'back home' becauseI haven't 'come from' anywhere to go back to. Do you catch my drift? I love the fact that I have a typical Yoruba name, because it shows where I am originally from and that is something I am vey happy about.
On application forms, sometimesI tick the 'Black British' box and sometimes the 'Black African' box. I think that the main problemwe have is, we feel that we are 'backing down' if we admit to being 'British'. We think that we are 'selling out'. I think that as long as we are aware of our culture and origination, then it's okay.
Having said all this, White people do not acceptme as being British and Nigerians do not accept me as being Nigerian (because I cannot speak Yoruba etc). So where doI belong???? Even my Asian manager told me that I had a Nigerian accent - which is total rubbish!!!! I can't even explain how much rubbish that is.Just because he sees my name he makes stupid comments regarding 'my country' and likening me to any other Nigerian he happened to know once upon a time. Anyway....... I kinda went off topic.
But.......
What is your take on this?

To be honest, I think African in the Diaspora including their future generations covers everything. If I had one problem with being British it'sthat I equate it with that license for everybody to be a free spiriti.eable to choose what they want to be. This by default meansdisunity for the non indigenous.

Simple solution. Get yourself two passports, so on the way out, you say you're nigerian, on the way back in, british...
Peace.

Adeola: you're Nigerian....with a british passport.... it is not up to other Nigerians to confer or take away your identity ..... nor are you any less of a Nigerian just because you don't speak Yoruba, ....... There is no confusion here you have a rich and deep cultural history you should learn it, rejoice in it and embrace it..
Africans comes in different shades and cultures...do not let anyone bully you to giving up your culture... Whilst you are a British national that honary position of holding a passport should not divert you from choosing an alien Culture over your own....You're African be proud of it....

Obviously im oj jamaican stock and before that African howver to say that im the same as my jamaican counterparts would be untrue....
personally I think the Afican/black British have their own style and should big it up at every opportunity

Question: Can you name me one other culture that is as eager to run away from its heritage as we sometime appear to be? If you met an Hasidic Jew in Birmingham tomorrow, born in this country (and we do have plenty) do you imagine they would be saying they are BRITISH first or Jewish first...?
If you meet a Muslim or for that matter a Chinese BORN in this country do you imagine they would say their BRITISH first or Muslim or Chinese first?
Even Amir Knan (Olympic Silver medalist) big time union jack wearer was in Pakistan bigging up the relief effort fot that country... He wasn't even BORN there for christ sake...So why are we soo eager to dump our culture on the alter of becoming BRITISH pray tell....?

To me it all depend on how you present yourself, as a Nigerian.... if you tell me that you are Nigerian but yet frown upon your culture and not willing to understandit or embrace the culture.. even learned the languagewhich I suspect is yoruba from your name... then to me you are lost.
Apart from that I have no problem with it....
As for the asian dude... hecankiss is himself where the sun don't shine.

Disagree...to say she is LOST means she can't come back..that she is forever cut off from her culture that is just not true.....she is young and has a CHOICE....
