The following article is about modern progression versus traditional customs. What do you think of the issues involved?

TWIN Zimbabwean brothers were charged with indecent exposure after strolling up to an up-market Harare shopping mall wearing only traditional goatskin loin cloths, a state-run newspaper reported Sunday.

Tafadzwa and Tapiwanashe Fichiani, 22, returned recently from 2 1/2 years in Britain vowing to promote an authentically African lifestyle, the Sunday Mail reported.

They were arrested at their home in Harare's plush Mount Pleasant suburb after complaints by indignant shoppers about their revealing attire, police spokesman Andrew Phiri told the paper. They were released pending prosecution.

Tafadzwa Fichiani told the paper they would continue wearing the loin cloths, known as nhembe, regardless of the penalty, a maximum fine of 25,000 Zimbabwe dollars (less than 30 US cents).

"We do not care what people say or think about us because we regard them as colonized," his brother, Tapiwanashe, was quoted as saying. "Why do they laugh at someone wearing nhembe, yet their ancestors wore nhembe before they were colonized?"

Despite coming from a wealthy family, the two refuse to sleep on Western-style beds and are vegetarians. They plan to move out of their expensive house in what was, until 1979, a whites-only suburb, to continue "God's work."

By opting for traditional Zimbabwean attire, the brothers are breaking with fashions set since independence from Britain in 1980 by the always immaculately coutured President Robert Mugabe, 81.

Mugabe was noted for buying his suits from London's Savile Row tailors until the United States and European Union imposed targeted sanctions in 2000 curbing his right to travel

Wow, that sucks! Arrested? This speaks volumes about the colonized mindset that people hold these days. It is really shocking that an incident like this can happen in a place with some form of cultural continuity. What a Shame!-Masai

I've taken a look at some of the other articles from that site, isn't there anything positive about Zimbabwe? It just seems like the usual biased motives of the media

Actually, I just read the article again, and it said loin cloths. Hmmph I dunno, it's all about context. In my town their are Indians, muslims, and Africans that wear traditional clothes, along with the rest that are just like me who wear European type clothes, and some that switch back and forth. Nobody seems to have a problem. But a loin cloth....

I do agree with them about not using beds, because I sleep on the floor, and it was a good decision.

Most of the stories seem sourced from the Zimbabwe Chronicle which has a reputation for local tribal news and ummm hmm

Stories about missing goats, witching of villages or people, mysterious events attributed to witching, spouses doing odd things to each other and so on.

I don't put much faith in it but that story made me think of the wider issue involved whether true or not.

I wear traditional clothes to church, weddings,or any other formal engagements. I need to find more casual traditional clothes. Everybody I know has them only for special events.

I don't mind sleeping on the floor, but then again sometimes I think about the lizards when they get in the house. Then again they can get on the wall anyway. No biggy.

I posted a topic along the same lines on ligali about this one all star game(American Football)I was watching where this Hawaiian(or was he Samoan) was doing this ethnic war dance to get him hyped up for the game and how the commentators were explaining what he was doing as if it were such a cool thing. I thought to myself, you couldn't pay an African to do that, because we care too much what other people think.

Why are they lost? They may consider you something else by talking trash from Europe and not on the ground helping improve the situation.
