@timeline

your lack of understanding of the phrase speaks volumes. Rest In Peace is based on the spirit resting untill ......once teh body dies its dead and returns to the dust from whichit was made but the spirit is more than that. The spirit is resting untill judgement day

but your interpretation will depend on what you believe to be true or not

Think outside of the box...Think in spirit

Why do people say "Rest in Peace" when people die? Most people (via polls) believe in a higher being and an afterlife so I assume that although the body appear to be asleep (eyes closed, lips sealed) the body is not alseep. The non-physical portion has left supposedly, so why "R.I.P?"

Does this symbolize a confusion concerning the five human senses? We see a body that appears to be asleep, using our sight, so we say that the person is "resting" yet we can also "touch" the body, notice that it is cold and decide that the warmth/life/energy that was once there is now lacking - which leads us to suspect that there was something more to the person than just the body.

All in all it seems to be a verbal contradiction that might indicate a deeper confusion.

I don't think it is a confusion, but just a euphemism that has grown out of certain religious beliefs. In Christian societies throughout the ages, the Christian theology inflicted a mild psychological trauma on populations where they believed theywere constantly proned to sin through their human nature. You were never at peace with the Lord. Back in the Middle Ages, once a person died they weresaid to be at peace with the Lord. Today, people just say it without really knowing where it comes from. I don't believe that "sin" exists; therefore, never use"Rest In Peace" as an expression.

Have never really examined why I say it but I guess I mostly say it out of respect and also hope that the persons "physical house" will not be disturbed in any way.

Also don't believe a

person has to be dead for you to wish them rest and as I have certain spiritual beliefs and customs my wish of rest applies to their spirit also.

I believe a spirit can "rest" when the loved ones it has left behind are getting on with their lives.

My understanding of the expression is thespirit spirit should rest in peace and not be disturbed by earthly events or worries.

When we are alive we work at live. Once you're dead the spirit should rest.

Sometimes words are empty....like your "speaking volumes" that you are unable to type in your post.... I guess I'll take your word for it lol.

Interesting that the spirit would need to rest in the body until judgement day. It would appear that a cold body indicates that whatever was alive in it is now gone. But they do put RIP on tomb stones over the body.

[line]
well the soul/spirit is resting but where who knows?
i doubt in the flesh because the flesh rots away.

I say rest in peace cos when my granny was alive she truly never got no rest or no damn peace. She had to put up with all sorts of things and now she gone there is nothing or noone to harm her. I say rest in peace for my cousin cos when he was alive he was constantly in pain with sickle cell, in and out of hospital. Now he doesn't have to go through that anymore. I don't care what the real meaning of rest in peace is, I only care about the significance it holds to me.
