Father gets life for baby murder

Knife-obsessed son killed parents


Roy and Joan Clarke were killed in the home they shared with their sonA bank worker obsessed with knives has been convicted of stabbing his mother and father to death in their home.


Michael Clarke, 21, had denied killing Milroy, 70, and Joan, 56, leaving their bodies in a pool of blood to go to a rock concert with friends.
But a jury at Bristol Crown Court found Clarke, a martial arts fanatic, guilty of the murders in Melksham in 2004. The court had earlier heard he had amassed a collection of more than 100 knives and other lethal weapons.

The jury of seven women and five men took more than 16 hours to find him guilty of two counts of murder by a majority of 11 to one.
When he heard the verdicts, Clarke showed little emotion. He will be sentenced on Friday.

Bristol Crown Court had earlier been told Mr Clarke Snr - a retired policeman - had suffered 17 separate stab and slash wounds in the attack. Mrs Clarke had been stabbed 14 times.


After killing them, Clarke went to Wembley Arena with friends to watch a Blink 182 concert, returning to the house in the early hours of the next morning and pretending to discover the bodies.
Clarke had denied the killings, claiming he had a perfect relationship with both his parents. The court was told he had earlier threatened to kill the pair after a row about the volume of his television set.


'Streets safer'
The jury is still considering its verdict in the case of Clarke's friend Stuart Painter, who denies assisting an offender.
He is accused of helping to dispose of the murder weapon and Clarke's bloodied clothes. Outside court, Sarah Leyfield, Michael Clarke's half-sister, read out a statement on the family's behalf.

"Milroy and Joan were a fun-loving couple who did not deserve to die in this way," she said. "They would always be there to help anyone if it was required; they did not deserve for their lives to end so savagely.
"The only positive thing about this was that they died together and not alone.
"The family will always ask themselves why were they so cruelly murdered in this way, but now, at last, we can get on with our lives."
Chief Superintendent Paul Howlett, who led the investigation, said the streets were safer with Clarke behind bars.


"Milroy and Joan Clarke were a hardworking and decent couple who should be enjoying the benefits of their working lives," he said.
"Instead they both met with premature deaths following what can only be described as calculated attacks delivered with extreme violence and deadly intent."

Twins get nine years for killing


The brothers were not blood relatives of Anjelica HallwoodTwin brothers who killed their step-grandmother while they robbed her of her life savings, have each been given nine year sentences.


Robert and Jonathan Maskell, and Dwane Johnston, were convicted last month of the manslaughter of Anjelica Hallwood, 74, in north London in January 2005.
The 19-year-olds, of Edmonton, got nine years for the killing and seven years for robbery, to run concurrently. They were ordered to be detained at a young offenders institution. the twins, who were not blood relatives of Mrs Hallwood, had believed she had about £3,000 at her home in Edmonton, the Old Bailey was told.

They left their own 18th birthday party to go to her house with Johnston.
Johnston hit Mrs Hallwood, who was only 4ft 10in, in the face then pressed down on her throat before the trio got away with more than £1,000.
After leaving her house they bought a mobile phone top-up card and a kebab then returned to their party.
Passing sentence, Judge Gerald Gordon said: "It is difficult to imagine a more despicable crime."


Extended licence
"For reasons of pure greed and regardless of the effect on her, you set out to rob her. "You could so easily have arranged to steal while she was out and safe."
Johnston had been staying with Mrs Hallwood. He was the boyfriend of her blood granddaughter and had just been released from prison for motoring offences.
The judge ordered that after their sentences had been served, their licence periods should be extended to three years so they could be recalled to detention if they broke their parole.
Speaking after the sentencing, senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Alistair Tully said of the twins: "I certainly think they are immature and appear to have a lot of growing up to do.
"I'm sure the time they will spend in prison will give them lots of time to reflect on what they have done."

It could be that some of "our own people" have decided to adopt "British values" in order to integrate as Trevor Phillips suggests.
