As a black person, if you were an actor or acres and quite high profile, are there any roles you would turn down if you felt you were being sterotyped or if you felt they would have a nagative influence on the way that other black epople were percieved? Or if it was a role that you felt a black person shouldn't be in?
For example a partner in an interacial relationship? Or a black police officer? Or a gangster?
Would appreciate your thoughts on this.
In my opinion, if i was an actress, there are cirtain roles I wouldn't take on because its pretty obvious that there is too much negativity surrounding us at the moment and I wouldn't want to be a contributor to that. So a stereotypical role would be out of the question. Does anybody else agree?

I wouldn't accpet any role where I had to be a prostitute or drug dealer.....unless I was playing an undercover FBI agent or something. lol lol I also wouldn't play any roles where there was voodoo and black magic and all of that nonsense involved.
Sex scenes - Halle Berry comes to mind in Monster's Ball..... a big no no!!!!

What's wrong with being a cop? I'd do that.
I wouldn't do the interracial relationship thing, token black clowning funny man routine... nuh uh. Don't want no white jesus or church in my scenes or anything like that... Don't see the point in being a pimp or a drug dealer because it's been done to death and if I'm a baddie in a movie I want to be a PROPER baddie damnit. I want minions and henchmen and witty lines...

I wouldn't take a police role cos the police force has done too much damage to our community. its a bit anal i know but I wouldn't want to be seen perpetuating that. thats just me tho.

It's pretty easy to say what you would and wouldnt do when you are NOT in the position of being a struggling starving Black actor, however if my profile became higher I would have to be select,re:inter-racial ,provided it was balanced and well written(if such a thing exists?)and I didnt have to get down with anyone who looked like Joe Pesci or the Mitchell brothers then id do it.
Prostitute no,Angry eye-popping,eye-rolling Black woman no,Drug Dealer no,Single mother of 8 kids with 8 different fathers,no,President or Judge,No!,Police Chief,no,they like to cast us in those roles to give the delusion of equality.
So,basically ive pretty much scuppered any hopes of an acting career.
I aint asking for nothing, just open the door and i\'ll take it myself-James Brown.

I guess you would also get to do the sequels... since I would have been killed off I wouldn't. But I'd be in high deman as a baddie. I have no worries about being typecast either. It worked for Christopher Lee.

You could be quite high up as an actor/tress but still need money.
They could pay you xcess amount of cashfor a high profile film andstill want you to play the jackass - Whoopi Goldberg?
But nah, anything that compromises my principles, I'm pretty sure that I would not play a prostitute/golddigger/fool/ for any money.

The chances are that you would compromised your principles. Most black people are too stoopid to know when they've been insulted, so the chances are you'd work on something degrading without your knowing.
Even a man like Danny Glover who seems to be quite conscientious has made some duff mistakes.
Almost every well known black actor, or even character actors that I now know thanks to IMBD have made some 'mistakes'. But that's what happens when you try to manoveur yourself whithin structures that you didn't create, and have minimal control over.
I think the best thing that black people can do collectively, is learn how to read the media properly, so that they don't just passively | |
