Fair enough, BB.
I'm not really taking it any deeper than her personality grates on me. Doesn't matter that she is African-American at all... just that she seems so damn bitter and her sense ofhumour is negative. Same with Roseanne Barr.
I don't find it funny that she is uncomfortable in her own skin, I know women bigger than her who have glow and good energy...life isn't all about being fat.

Liberiangirl,
African men and indeed men of all races put up fat and large obnoxious women. And you can add abusive to that to while you are at it. Don't go on like no African man has ever had to put up with that.
I have no opinion of Monique as she has no effect on my life, neither am I into her type of comedy. But I wont go around and start slagging her off.
I have noticed BNV is amazing to a large extent. If she goes on to the movie and pulls a Sanaa, curses would rain down. If she goes Nude or semi-nude, curses would rain down. Now she has gone and hooked up with a brother, curses are raining down.
Sounds like hateration to me.

Like MT said, some of the comments are uncalled for.
Maybe i was being rather mean, cant help it, i have my fathersdry sense of humor. I simply dont like Monique. She does nothingwhatsoever topromote any positive images of black women on tv. She seems perfectly content with playing the role of the stereotypically , loud, ghetto, ignorant, overtalkative black woman that the media loves to portray. And go figure, since that seems to be the type ofwoman she really is. My beef with her has nothing to do with her with her weight, its her attitude on stage and off. And as for people on BNV critizing black celebrities, whatever our opinion we have of them we certainly can express it. Its not like we dont give props to black actors who play good roles or who are doing great things. Wesimply call it like we see it. If you dont like it, you can always log off and find another forum to post on.

Typical liberiangirl, typical.
You are free to express your opinion and I am not? I say something contrary to your opinion and all you can say is if I dont like it, 'I should go look for another forum' to post on? Tough luck, aint going nowhere anytime soon. Cant remember telling you not to express yourself.
@ DSP. Maybe you miss my point. I am not a big fan of Monique either, neither am I into her type of humour. But all most of the comments have been about how ugly she is, bitter, obnoxious. etc and etc. Most of the comments surely dont come across as discussing the stereotype, but have been more personal attacks and I still stand by it that some of them have been unnecessary.

I agree with you. I laughed in my post because I wonder if sheknows how transparent she is.

The fact that she is a comedian allows her to cloak her insecurities in comedy. I do find her funny, but I do feel she has a lot of baggage she needs to let go (no pun intended). smoking-devil

Well I'm ambivalent about Monique but my mother really likes her. I guess she serves a purpose for some people so we should let her be.She hasn'tcaused any real harm with her skinny women are evil business. How many skinny women are actually losing sleep over what Monique says? I know I'm not.

I thought it was an American playing a stereotypical African role...

Now all these overweight American women gonna have false hope/confidence they can get any random African guy, hell they already think that. Ran from one before that thought I was looking for papers. Even if I was, better to send me back to the refugee camp than marry into such prison/slave condition. If I couldn't get away or findanother means of legal status, I'd voluntarily turn myself into INS before I do that.

LadyDay.. I had the misfortune to see SoulPlane once..and it was without doubt the WORSE film I'd ever seen...the KKK couldn't have done a better job if they had tried...

Typical of whom?Of course you are free to express your opinion, but saying that other should express their opinion in a certain wayis a bit of a contradiction, dont you think? An opinion is subjective and it can be voiced subjectively. If someonedoesnt like monique because she is uglyand fat, however superficial that may be, they are certainly welcome to feel that way.

When the missionaries came to Africa, they had the bible and we had the land. They taught us to pray with our eyes closed. When we opened them, they had bible, and they had the land.

Thats more like it.
Personally, I have more issues to take up with the film than just Monique being ugly. An obvious lack of research into the roles being playes as displayed by the accent and one or two comments from the trailer. A lot of American Actors really need to learn and understand that Africa is not just a big block of people with only one culture and that all Africans dont speak with the same intonation and accent, the comment about Nigerians loving fat women culturally is very wrong too.
But on a lighter note, it is good to see something that doesnt project Nigerians as 419scam artistes. A Nigerian doctor, that is a good one.
Rubbish accent, but positive role..
