The following has been copied and pasted from elsewhere. So before any of you begin running up, the following is not my opinion, infact it is the first ive heard of this point of view. I have no idea of how true it is but i thought i would test the waters to see the reaction. It is not intended to offend anyone especially Dominicans here. Nor is it intented to be inflammatory. Im just interested to hear the debate if any. Le Moor
Anyone else find it interesting that dominicans say they are not black? im not saying all dominicans think this but it seems that the majority of dominicans will say anything to separate themselves or claim they are not black. its clear that they are black, but because they speak spanish they think they are somehow not black. spanish is a language, many different nationalites speak spanish. i speak spanish as do most of the members of my family. but we would never say we are not black. anyone can look at some of the major league baseball players (david ortiz-red socks, pedro martinez-mets, vladimir guerro, sammy sosa, etc) and easily see they are black. but ask a dominican if they or these people are black and they will say no. in the dominican republic they have all sorts of terms to define dark skin people. but no dominican wiil ever say they are black. this is a sickness, in my opinion. there are black people in cuba, puerto rico, panama, honduras, columbia, equador, venezuala, etc. but someow the dominicans have convinced themselves (due to years of negative propaganda about black people) they are not black. anyone else have any thoughts about black dominicans or so-called black hispanics, who just because they speak spanish think they are not black? i can't dictate to someone what they are, but its more than clear that the majority of dominicans are black (looking no different than the black americans). anyone have any thoughts about this?

Well from what i read in books and researched,I read a similarthing that many are in denial of their black roots.
But then i found out that the majority (like 70%) of the dominican republicans are mulatto (mixed African and Spanish ancestry with a tint of Taino blood somewhere).
As the mulatto is potrayed as a sexual and beautiful object in a predominantly mixed country, then this sort of behaviour is inevitable.
When the European men were having sex with Black women, they apparently never saw them as anything but mere sexual objects. When they produced abundant offspring, a result of both races, then things changed: the black woman was left in the shadows, while the mulatto and mestizos had privilleges to a certain extent.
To be honest though, i have NEVER come across any people from the Dominican Republic and would like to know some to get their views on this situation.
GOOD TOPIC!

me and my wife went to the dominican for honeymoon
very, very racist people.
were saying to me, you look like one ofus,(im not even light)but tomy wife "youre too dark, too dark"
and the lighter skinned ones get best jobs in the hotels, darker ones get bum jobs, and are not allowed to speak to the tourists.
almost killed my wife too, on a intravenous drip for days cos they cannot cook.
and this is in a five star hotel.
colonising wretches.

I have gone toe to toe with Dominicanos about this issue. I know some Dominicans and Cubans who look so close to continental African who will pop off that nonsense.
Brainwashing at its most effective. It is a lifetime dissertation to go into the problems hispanics have with untangling the issues of ethnicity, culture and race, but the bottom line is, you will find many more who donot consider themselves part of the diaspora. Again, many do not want association with "bottom of the pile"... it steams me right up.
You will find this is many, many countries colonised by the Spanish. I think they were way more effective than the British even in their instillation of self hatred.
You do, however, find pockets of communities that are decidedly pro-african in culture and outlook. In my personal experiences, they are mostly Puerto Rican or Cuban but I have met others from Belize and Honduras.

As you can seehighlighted in red, Dom-Rep has the largest population of africans living on the island today followed by Cuba. It is sheer irony how domincans refuse to be called black. Yet, there island has the biggest percentage of blacks. It's not just Dom-rep that like to perceive themselves as mulatto's..it's a latin america thing...

I had a similiar experience in Cuba. I was absolutely fedup of people referring to me as ''mulatto'' because i'm light skin. Both my parents are afro-caribbean, so how is that so?...and what is this foolishness with afro-cubans describing themselves as ''tanned skinned''...i really want to know...confused3confused3

Now Cubans this is another story...most ones i know of are not in denial of their African roots...they acknowledge and celebrate their african heritage through rumba and other aspects of their culture...

What about Argentina? Why they miss that out...statistic...they show a lot but leave out a lot aswell. And if these statistics are right then that means that there are more blacks in Peru/ Ecuador/Mexico than there is in the UK; and funny how AA ppl and other Americans stress the need to call them LATINOS...not black, white, Taino, or anything else.
