maybe it's just me or the building that i work in! but has anyone noticed that when you are the first person in the lift people expect you press the button for their floor for them! i find it quite rude simply because if you come in YOU press it your goddamn self! :P
once it was just me and this middle-aged white women and i had got in first and pressed my floor, but as soon as she stepped in she 'said 8 please' so i pretended i didnt hear her and i got out at my stop. then she realised i didnt press it and made some comment about it not stopping.
is it unreasonable for me to think this way? i always press the button for myfloor i dont understand how it can be so difficult for other people to do it for themself! is this one of theunwritten rules about being in a lift?!
just had to get that off my chest as it really pisses me off! hhead

I thoughtitswas theother way round, the last person that gets in the lift will ask forthe floors, reason been in a packed lift you don't want to betwisting ur arm around someone to press the floor you are going to.. that I can understand.

I actually find it rude when the person nearest the buttons doesn't ask what floor. You are the closest person to it and it doesn't cost you anything.
Gosh what happened to good old fashioned manners confused3

co sign. Whats the big deal about pushing a button if you are already standing right there? its not as if you are expected to get under the lift and push it up to the floor!!!

That being said, i don't ASK people what floor, after all, i am not a lift attendant (!) but if i am first in and i am standing right there and they say a floor i will press it. And alot of times the panel with the buttons is quite small. The first in is the first to press, therefore they are right in front of the panel. Ergo, they are "in the way" of other people who may want to use the panel.

If it bother you that much, press your floor then move to the corner of the lift furthest from the panel. But i think that is MORE effort than just pressing the button lol

Like i said, if someone ASKS for a floor, i will happily press it. However, i am not going to keep asking people which floor esp. if they are able to reach the panel themselves. If i am blocking the panel, then fair enough. Otherwise, i am not going to stand there asking folks which floor they want!!
Nuttin to do with holding doors. I always hold doors open. What bothers me is when folks don't say thank you, or a whole stream of people come through, as though you are some kind of doorstop!

see its not about being a "lift attendant" its just common manners...afterall if you dont press it the lift aint gonna move...
I don't bother asking, I just reach for the button regardless if its packed. Cant be bothered with the hassle.

well i dont believe im expected to do that for anyone. i dont think it has anything to do with manners, please and thank you are manners! not pressing the button for some lazy arse who cant be bothered to do it themself!i find it rather lazy not to press the button yourself!
i think it is an english mentality to be frank.
@ blackthought
obviously if the lift is packed then fair enough.
@ madam butterfly
well that's exactly what happens isnt it? everyone expects you to do it after a while. and just because someone might be first in the lift doesnt necessarily mean they will be in way of the buttons.
@ blackpower
the lift will move as long as one person has pressed their floor so if you dont press it not my problem is it?
idont believe there is a right or wrong answer to that particular situation i think it is down to the individual. there are different situations that call for manners but i dont think that is necessarily one of them. like various issues in society we are just expected to conform and do what everyone else is doing and not challenge why.

I personally think you're looking too deep into this.

*To be honest I was actually referring to a situation such as a packed lift. However if there is one other person in the lift I will react depending on how I am asked. If they ask me ''can you press number 5 please...thanks'' then by all means I have no qualms. But none of this ''5'' business. I't all in how you ask really-as long as your polite about it I have no issues with pressing the button.

I came home once time a lil late at night and there was a weird looking woman just standing by the lift. So I went and stood and waited too. Nothing happened. She looked at me and said "ain't you gonna press it then?" I was so baffled!! I presumed since she was already there and staring at the lift that she had called it. Anyway I pressed the lift and it came. She got in first and stood at the back. I stood near the buttons and pressed my floor (top floor) and asked "what floor?"she looked all suspiscious and asked ME "what floor are YOU going?" I proper stared at her... a lil shook now because crazy people worry me and I didn't want to turn my back on this woman. Anyway the lift goes all the way to my floor (the top) and I get out. She doesn't... I was SOOOOOOO baffled that day!

@ DM, i woulda told her to take the lift, then get the next one!! i also would have been a lil suspiscious that she did not push the button to call the lift. Maybe something nasty was on it, or you might have fallen victim to one of those prank shows where they out superglue on it or sumpten squirts out!

There was a slightly more sinister air to the whole encounter. Not like she was playing a joke... but like she escaped from somewhere and men in white coats were conducting a frantic search if you get me.
