Ok, the story goes like this.
A family member of mine works in Nursing. Now it is practice for members of staff to have a 'colour code' so to speak because symtoms may have different outcomes on skin complexion for example, meningitis the rash may not come up cleary.
Any way, the code follows from 1-6 1-3 being white complexion 4-5 Asian and 6 being dark complexion.
Now my family memberwas totally alarmed when she saw number 6 and the words 'NEGRO' written in black bold letters in brackets to draw attention, this was clearly written by a consultant.
When this was brought to attention the white members of staff came with the argument of ' oh i do not think he meant to put that etc etc'. Now I do not mean to be pendantic but someone who takes the effort to put in in brackets is a means of drawing attention to what they have written.
Now I think to myself, why did this consultant feel the need to put negro when everyone is fully aware of the number scheme.
Comments please.

Negro is part of the spanish language. You might as well ask to ban the word black or noir.

1, African is to Asian as Asian is to Caucasian.
2, White is to Brown as Brown is to Black.
The Dr would have to stick within either two of these numbers for a correct and fair descripiton.
A mixture of the two descripitions can only lend itself toaccusations of having an agenda or bearing prejudice etc.
Thats how i see the politically correct version.
The word Negro has a derogatory history and is so old fashioned that anyone using it todaywould more than likely have a problem with us. (in the UK at least not sure if its a word still widely used in America)

Negro has negative connotations, and yes I am fully aware of its orgins but my gripe is everyone in that environment is fully aware of the code therefore it was unecessary for him to put (NEGRO) and therefore he is taking the Pee pee, my man even had the audacity to put it in black letters to emphasize his point.

If Negro has negative connotations does that mean Black has negative connotations? In spain if you are areading this forum the translation for 'BlackNet village' is: 'Aldea NetaNegra' where Negra is the female for Negro.

The issue is not the word, it's the misuse of the word, like calling someone a 'black b*std', there is no reason for adding colour to the phrase but if you are not black and happen to be prejudice/racist/someone who fears that they do not know, then colour becomes an issue.

"Negro" is Latin for "Black". If you don't mind being called back then you shouldn't mind being called negro. Whites don't seem to mind being called caucasian - negro is the analagous term.
White forums seem to have started using the term 'groid. I recently saw "Alan Sugar - a touch of the 'groid?" It gets around the "negro" taboo but isn't an improvement in my book.

I can't even believe that someone seriously started a thread to question whether it is OK to be referred to as a 'Negro'....you have got to be joking surely?

The latin word for black is "niger" which the spanish, portuguese and italians later derived the word negro...which was applied to dark skinned people - not exclusively those of african origin.

Oh, I just looked it up - you're right, we're all "niger". Did you know Latin for "white" is "albus"? Hence, I s'pose, Albion, land of the whites.
