Two questions really.
If the UK/USA had a draft and your name was called would you serve or refuse and spend that time in jail?
And for those whose parents were not born in the UK/USA if the home country of your parents (grand parents) had a draft and required you to serve to keep your citizenship of that country would you serve?
This question didn't come from where many of you might think. The Mrs and I along with a good friend of mine (military) and his wife were talking about the dual citizenship of our children. And it was asked that if Japan had a draft, and my sons name came up what would I advise him to do.
I really havn't figured out what my answer would be.

Depends who and for what. If you mean fight in this current war against Arab Islam then certainly not because we are the aggressor and the cause is wrong. I'm not dying for some imperialist greedy cause for somebody elses stuff.
If however say, Germany got naughty again and attacked this country directly like in 39-45 then probably yes since I live here and my interests are here. I would do.
I believe military should be soley about DEFENCE. That is what it is called in parliament. There is a ministry of DEFENCE and the chancellor sets the DEFENCE budget. Not an attack ministry or a colonising ministry. Yet that's how it's run.
So simply, if the cause is right. yeah
Though I have to add, I'd leave the country before going to jail for refusing the draft...Ain't going to jail cosa bunch of white folks want me to face some damn Arabs in their little contest. Uh uh

Apart from the fact that they would have to be pretty damn desperate to want me on the front line with my dodgy knees and suspect hip joint.
Still, the chances are that I would likely object to being forced to fight for a regime I have little or no trust in, given their record on sleaze, greed and corruption, and the diabolitical treatment of those who they don't count (which would include me) as one of their own.

There are those who feel that the only way to ‘prove their own worth’ is by ‘devaluing the worth of others’. You will often find that a man who is compelled to measure his substance against the substance of another, has little of substance in the first place!

No offense to you Parris, but I would never fight for this country unless someone actually invaded our soil. Recent wars have only used our army as tools of Western imperialism. I refuse to be a tool if I can help it.
If my name was called here in the States, I am either leaving to Central America, a Latin-Carribean island, or an African country ifI could speak and live there and they let me work as a professional engineer and business/investing person.

I knew of a classmate who was ROTC in college...
he graduated and then refused to do his required service....and I think all he had to do was pay back the military fro paying for his tuition......
I'd probably refuse to fight and do my time(jail) and/or pay a fine....
Parris what is(was) the letter of the law about refusal to serve during a draft?
I've seen my friend get out of serving for time he voluntarily agreed to serve and he just had to pay.....

No, I'd never fight for this country, ever. I'd rather spend time in jail or pay a huge fine.

Prince: the author of this thread is not Banned, we recieved a complaint about an entirely different matter it was investigated and the decision found against said person, it was felt that a temporary period of cooling off was warranted....

This is a perfect example as to why the military prefers to have 18 year old boys. They don't know enough torealize that they are just ponds.
For 41 years I have been fighting a social, economic and psychological war right here in the good ole USA. No need to go anywhere else and fight.
