dyselxia is a learning diffculty, which can affect how the brain functions with regards to reading and writing, poor time management skills, sequencing of letter writing and writngletters back to front, i would like to tell you about a story that happened to one of my cousins.
she went for a dyslexia assesment test with aneducational psychologist. the first thing he said to her was, black people do not get tested for dyslexia, only white people, he also said that she should not have the right tobe their and she must have had another learning diffculty, and he did not even belive that she had dyslexia.
my cousin was very upset at his attitude towards her and she could not believe that the educational psychologist was so blantantly rude towards her. he was 100% sure that dyslexia was specifcally for white people, which bring to the question, why it is he said that, and what does he define, as a black person with learning diffculties.

what utter BS. When i was doing my A levels there was a Black guy who got extra time in exams because he was dyslexic.
What area of the country does your cousin live? Learning difficulties are colour blind. God help any Black children who live within this mans catchment area.
I think Soulstarr was saying (and she can correct me if i am wrong!) that in her experience, Black children are slower to get diagnosed as having a learning difficulty. Therefore, poor work quality and behaviour are more likely to be put down to "naughtiness".
This guys attitude really makes me sick. God forbid a Black child should have a genuine explanation for how they are and get the proper help.
YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY OTHER PEOPLES\' OPINION OF YOU!! ;0)

The primary school my little one goes to sent me a letter saying they were sending him for a test months ago - up to now!
I have spoken to his teacher who could only tell me that she knew that a little white girl had had hers done, but didnt even know if my son had had his! The school office had no test results for him
I'm getting him tested privately myself - f*ck them!

First off, Dyslexia is not colour or race related. This psychologist is a total disgrace to my profession and personally I would advice you to name and shame them NOW.. before they cause anyone else any personal harm by their ignorance.
Now this link here is not about me selling anything but it is a gate way.. http://www.hometonight.co.uk/LD.htm
My background is as a Specialist Learning Support Tutor with a doctoral degree in psychological pathology plus a level 4 qualification in SpLD plus a level 4 qualification in Adult Literacy.
Good luck... Erskine..

Why? Because he comes from that school which believe Black people are naturally dumb...if your cousin is having probs, then he feelsthis is just a default of her being Black, because 'we' all have a naturall learning difficulty. Foolish man.

Bdiamond,
That is a load of crap !. Though I was never diagnosed with the disorder, there are plenty of Black people who get tested for the disorder. one of my good friends is dysleic, two of three of her daughter are in the same boat and they are African-American. She sent them to a psychologist because it was interfering with their education as they seen things in a reverse manner. It's been several years, but she along with her daughters has graduated from college with her being ayouth counselorand her daughters as school teachers.Such assumptions is a hinderance and will keep us behind. A learning disability is one where something that hinders the child from learning--in this case dyslexia. Who ever this psycholgist is , they need to be banned from his practice because he seem incompetent of his job.

DISLEXIA! It's one of the biggest miffs of modern time.
I hear quite a few university/college students are on to the 'game'. Apparently you get all kinds of concessions (e.g. free computer and other IT'educational aids', not to mention more exam time) if you are diagnosed dyslectic, so more and more 'sly' students are getting in on the act. Blacks as well as whites are getting diagnosed, and the thing is, it is actually easier (I hear)for blacks to get diagnosed (due to racial bias in the why the tests are constructed).
I smiled when I saw this thread because I know of a few real life instances of students who 'played the system' and did well out of it.
Still, I don't buy this so-called 'learning disability of the 21st century'.
Respect
There are those who feel that the only way to ‘prove their own worth’ is by ‘devaluing the worth of others’. You will often find that a man who is compelled to measure his substance against the substance of another, has little of substance in the first place!
