Black community urged to turn up in numbers at House of Commons Mental Health Bill debate

Members of the black community are being urged to turn up in numbers by campaign group Black Mental Health UK to attend the third reading and debate of the troubled 2006 Mental Health Bill at the House of Commons, Westminster.

The debate on the 2006 Mental Health Bill will be held on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 June between 3.30pm and 10.00pm. MPs will get their only opportunity to debate and then vote on changes to the law which are likely to touch the lives of every black family living in Briton today.

Matilda Macattram, Director of BMHUK said: “The civil liberties of people in our community are at stake here - we are encouraging anyone who has the time and who cares about our civil liberties and freedoms to come down and listen to the debate - even if it’s only for an hour. Our presence in these arenas does make a difference.

Institutionalised racism within mental health services has been blamed for the disproportionately negative experiences of African Caribbeans in particular, who are 44 per cent more likely to be sectioned than a British white person despite similar rates of mental ill health.

If the Bill is passed unchallenged, there are fears it will allow health professionals to forcibly medicate anyone suspected of mental illness within their homes without a warrant. Health experts believe that the increased powers will be used in a racist way and turn professionals into jailers.

Macattram said: “We will have to live with the changes in these laws for at least a generation. It is important to come and see for yourself who is speaking out for us and supporting us at such a critical time so we can do the same for them at the next election.

Visitors attending will view the debate from the public gallery. For full information follow the link below.
