I know in many states I have been to have this, I don't know in the UK or other places, but this may be a prevalent practice. Any time you give$20 bill and higher almost all store clerks alwaysget-out this pen that they use to check if the money is fake or not! They just slash it and if it turns color then it is fake. I bet this is humiliatingfor many.
So, here is whatI do, I bring my own pen to the store and when ever thekeeper gives mea change over 20,I do what they did to me and others. And when they ask what I'm doing? I say, it is just a black pen and only to checkeverything they give me back is notfake.
Plus, this practice happens morewhere many minorities live

Pele: Lmao, i know what you mean... in the uk they hold the £5,£10 or £20 notes up to the light..... So when I get it back change I hold it up to the light too and check it.. and I have been known to hand money back that i think is suspect and ask them to change it..

LOL I expect people to do it with £50s and occasionally with £20s but not £10s usually. @ K if somebody checked my £5 I'd be pissed off. That's just rude. Who on earth forges £5 notes? The cashier is taking the piss and deliberately insulting you

A fake pound coin factory got busted in enfield last month. Got hit with a dud here at work.
Can't forge £20, they've got the new euro friendly ones out.

You shouldn't always assume its racist. When i had a weekend job at an electical store and even when I was 16 and working in McDonalds I used to check every note. We had to even if it looked real because you'd be surprised how many good fakes are out there andwe'd get into a lot of trouble if a fake got into our till. I had one guy make a big point of checking the £5 note that I gave him back as change as I checked his £10 but at the end of the day I didn't give a toss because as far as i was concerned i don't know any of the customers and I am the one getting in trouble at the end of the day. Some of the clerks may have race bias but the vast majority just don't want to end up with a warning. We also used to get info from our seniors if there was a particularly high level of fakes notes of a certain denomination in the area so we would have to be very careful.
