BABY 'HIT BY KILLER'

A BABY of 14 months was found whimpering and starving in his cot beside the body of his murdered mother, a court heard yesterday.

Dejaughn Chambers, who lay alone for two days, had a soiled nappy and a blanket covering his head.

There were handprints on his face where it is claimed the alleged killer, Polish immigrant Wojciech Ciesla, slapped him hard to stop him crying.

Prosecutors claim Ciesla, who moved to the UK in 2004, broke in to rob Juline Chambers' bedsit but strangled her in front of her baby once he got inside.
She was still in her nightgown when found by concerned neighbours in Plumstead, South East London, in August 2005.

Prosecuting, Sally Howes, QC, said the baby had been hit "very hard". She said: "The baby had scratches and bruises to his face. He had extensive bruising to his ear, scratch marks on his cheeks, and haemorrhaging to an eye."

A postmortem revealed Ms Chambers had been strangled. Ms Howes said: "Pressure must have been applied for a minimum of 16 to 30 seconds."

Ciesla lived briefly in the same street - but by the time of the alleged murder he was dossing down in a carwash where he worked.

The jury at the Old Bailey heard claims he burgled two other homes, leaving fingerprints and DNA.

Ciesla denies murder, grievous bodily harm and three counts of burglary. The trial continues.
