A question of ethics/conscience -
04-07-07, 08:54 PM
OK, so my group were supposed to be going on tour this summer. But due to some reason or other they had to cancel. However they are rescheduling (sp) for October. Now here is the quandry: VIP (ie meet n greet) tickets will be available, but i would have to be at the venue for 4.30 pm. The concert is taking place on a Friday. This would mean having to fake illness to get out of work early. The last time my group were over here was 10 years ago, and i am getting to an age where the lickelyhood of me ever seeing them in concert again (assumin they ever come to europe again!) is slim to nil.g
So how unethical/conscienceless is it, given the circumstances, to throw a half day sickie and go to the meet n greet?!?! The "main show" is for 7pm, which i could just about make without having to throw a sickie (may have to wangle myself out of a staff meeting though!!)
Anyone ever thrown a sickie for same/similar reasons? did reward outweigh the guilt!?!?

Half day sickie! I'd feel no way to fake a day and a half sickie. You know, time to get my glad rags sorted and to really chill out and get in the swing of things for the concert that day. Girl, spoil yourself. prepare to fain illness the afternoon before the concert day. Good luck.
God determines who walks into your life...It's up to you who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go. May God bless all of you and your life be full of Peace, Prosperity, Love and Abundance. Amen

We blacks are real mugs to ourselves when it comes to things like this. I had the same dilemma after joining a company and needing to take a day off fort a funeral. After that experience I vowed never to miss a funeral because of work again...I'm ready to resign. It so happens that I've been at my new job less than 6 weeks and have already taken last week Thursday off for a funeral and have taken next week Thursday off for another (Dwaine Douglas's).
We need to stop feeling guilty about things like this, indeed I believe you earn the right to take half days off like this. Another complex we have is a feeling of having to make the bed and clean the bathroom when we stay in hotels

It is in October, surely that gives you enough time to book the day off
If we do not have an accurate analysis of the problem, we cannot possibly develop a good strategy to resolve it.

These companies don't give a damn about their staff (especially us) anyway so i'd feel no way in taking time off. just make sure you fake cough and sneeze the day before so it's more convincing.

so all round dishonesty is unanimous then lol can't book the day off as i can't take holiday during term time Incognition, your circumstances were different. A funeral is a perfectly legit reason to take a day off and you wouldn;t have to lie about it. I can't hardly say i want the day off to go to a concert lol Hmmm i think i will feel a touch of something coming on a couple of days before hand ...
i really can't believe not one person has cursed me out for wanting to fake illness to take time off for a non serious reason
so am i to take it that we all have a board full of tricky sickies then?!?!

Errr....YES!!!!!
Your profession is one of the toughest, and I applaud you for doing it. Hell, I'm childminding right now, and it's bloody hard work in itself, much less trying to teach kids who don't want to be taught!
Have a great time!

MB - you tan deh...managers all asking how closely related to the deceased you are. Some friends you grew up with and haven't seen for years but you still want to pay your respects.
Even the funeral I went to last week, I think the last time I saw my girl alive was nearly ten years ago but Battersea for me is where I still feel is home so any one who grew up down there in the days is worth a mention. The reunion was absolutely out of this world..I had to check myself several times to remind myself that it was actually a funeral I was attending. You can't be telling your boss this...

Your guilt comes from the knowledge that you know it is the children and work colleges who you will be disrupting....just so you can go meet and greet.
Can't you just make do with going to the concert? The meet and greet will probably be a disapoinment anyway, they nearly always are.
