A Blair loyalist, often painfully so - their connection goes back to her Equal Opportunities Commission days. Was sidelined as soon as Brown took over. Not a great deal of time for brothers in my (direct) experience, but she has her fans.

To get to that level of office in government (particularly under Blair) needs a level of compromise of self that most would find unacceptable. That she was promoted several times says a lot, especially as someone who has never stood for public office.

I read where she lobbied to be the EU rep at the African Union headquarters in Ethiopia.

Is she the British version of Condi or worse?

There's something in the comparison as far as slavish devotion to their master is concerned. Don't think Amos carried much influence at the centre of power - not much equivalence between being International Development Secretary or Leader of the House of Lords here and Secretary of State in the US in terms of policy impact.

Plus my understanding is that Condi at least has some academic weight predating her role in government - that is certainly not true of Amos, unless you count honorary doctorates.
