If only they would line up with such enthusiasm to buy books or attend career fairs that would alter their lives
one will need a bigger lie to cover the first one

Sad to see how these kids line up for two days for some damn shoes. Like astmartins said, they should be lining up at places where they can buy books on African history to learn about their heritage and how they can better themselves.

"The group lined up outside his store was a mix of 20-something Michael Jordan fans and middle-aged professionals.
A financial analyst from Stone Mountain, 45-year-old Vince Shields, took off two days from work. He says he plans to add the new Air Jordans to his collection of 75 pairs of sneakers."
Not sure that crowd sounds completely like kids who'd be better off at a careers fair - can well imagine some middleaged guys (who would have been twentysomethings when AirJordans first came out) reliving a bit of their youth - and if they're in a position to afford $230 trainers, good for them.
Wouldn't catch me there in a million years - but I can remember how popular those trainers were, and with less than 500 pairs for sale across the US? No surprise there's a queue. Getting there Wednesday for a Friday opening is kinda extra, though....

Bloody foolishness.
The material road of entrapment is a powerful thing. Putting themselves through all that over something that will be obsolete in the near future anyway....

My point exactly....Silly man he should have been dishing out financial advice to the people in the queue..its all about priorities bro...its that same mentality that makes certain entertainers buy 10 luxury cars and find out they got dropped by a record label or a sportstar not having their contracts renewed...and end up broke
Just because you got some $$s now doesn't mean you cannot end up broke!!...this credit crunch business is no laughing matter...just wait and see

No different from the people who line up god knows how long to buy a playatstaion/x-box or to buy concert tickets.
You ever heard of the Golden Rule. He who has the gold makes the rules!
He who asks is a fool for five minutes. He who never asks remains a fool for ever.

Agree.
there was a thread about year ago on this board talking about cell phones....people have all types of bells and whistles and unnecessary gadgets. it's all good....I wouldn't do a lot of stuff with my money that others do, but live and let live....
everybody has something that they splurge on......

Some here are missing the point you probably were in that queue too go on admit it...its the importance our youths give to a pair of trainers you could get killed for them...its obsesive and exploitative and most cannot even afford it...buy them a $300 trainers but cannot pay their school fees or books??...pleeze we not talking about those people that can easily afford it...just because they had some wanton Financial dude in there...
one will need a bigger lie to cover the first one

The point being what? No-one here is saying they'd be in the queue, and why are you so convinced that all the people there were spending money they didn't have? Maybe you know more than we do.....or you're reading a lot into not very much information, in my opinion.
It's not behaviour I'd indulge in or would recommend to anyone (last pair of trainers I bought cost me twenty quid), but there are plenty of things I'd rank higher in the list of evils of capitalism and consumerism than this.

Good for Nike....my point is not in reference to this article per se in but to the importance and credence we give to trainers a.k.a Sneakers
one will need a bigger lie to cover the first one
