note point me in the right direction please - 30-01-08, 01:57 PM

i dont know if Ive put this in the right place

i have teenage children who are into reading, i would like to know where the best shops/websites are for black authors who write for black teens, are there any children's comedy books that have been written and books that deal with issues for black children

i also would like some advice for me as a black woman,i would like to learn more about black history, but not the media stuff - you know, we were slaves ,we died the end!!!. I'm ashamed to say it but i know next to nothing about my history

where would be the best starting point to learn more and teach my children more about black history without trapping them in second class mentality.

i am feeling kinda "lost" today and just need a sign to point me in the right direction

Another suggestion would be to checkout you local library. Every now and then they host book fair s, and you may be lucky and find some black books there.

For example in my borought there is an African Caribbean Community Library which is part of Clapham Junction Libraray located on Lavender Hill opposite Asda. TThey have a wealth of Black books covering a variety of issues. Last year they had a book fair ( which I was not aware of until the last minute). I was able to purchase a childrens African folktales books which had stories based on the Benin Kingdom for 30p.

Two weeks ago I happen to be in South Norwood giving in an application form, and decided to take a visit to the local libraray. They were also having a small boook fair, and I was able to by a book by one of Britains most celebrated Black Authrs Malorie Blackman for 20p.

You also mentioned something about wanting to learnm more about your history.
Here are a few suggestions.

1. In The Village Section of this website etehr is a thread called Pirate Radio Stations. In there I have posted a list of Black community Radio stations of interest that deal with our issues from a grassroots level. Some of the hosts on some of these stations are associated with orgnaisations who host various events which deal with our history.

For example Galaxy 99.5FM have a host called Bro Omowale who is part of many Pan African Organisations. He co hosts a talkshow with Bongo Tetteh on Sunday afternoons from 12pm -3pm. Between 12 -12.30pm he usually reads out a list of upcoming community events.

He also host The Pan African Peoples Phone In on Sundays from 10pm -12am, which deals with current serious issues, black history, etc etc. I would go deeper, but its best if you checkout the list for yourself.

You should also checkout the Community Announcement section, where people post up upcoming events.

If you need any more info feel free to PM me.

Agree with Judge J, don't let Amazon teif your money, make a list and place an order with a black owned bookstore, the prices aren't that far off from what they offer on Amazon although I'm finding that some owners can be their own worst enemy letting their own veiws get in the way of business, tried to place an order with one store and they didn't order it in because they're christian and the book was about the Kabbalah. Annoying but try it anyway.

thanks for the suggestions

i was just feeling lost as to where i should start with my children about our history, i did not want to start with slavery, i wanted to start with black people before them, and then introduce it after, i dont want them to read the slavery material first, and then develop a second class mentality, my aim is to arm with knowledge, hope, inspiration and also warn them of some the obstacles they will face as black adults.

i want them to feel comfortable and proud of who they are, and still be able to stand strong when they are faced with the hatred of others.

i want them to read books that inspire them to go forward and reach their full potential, no matter who tries to hold them back

i hope that make sense

Regarding Black History courses:

Black History Studies / info@blackhistorystudies.com

There are short and long courses. The long courses are done in North and South London, and Birmingham and i think in Liverpool.

The other place i know is in Walthamstow
Onyeka - one of the UK's foremost black writers
