Holiday Destinations - places you have to see. -
23-03-08, 09:40 AM
Village people, there's a big world out there and my ambition as a child was to visit every country on the planet before I die. Kind of got the far east on my mind, want to see The Great wall of China et all and seriously thinking about taking a year off work for a world tour, a kind of round the world in 12 months adventure.
So, I was wondering the places you've been and the things you've seen in the world and what you would recommend as a must do holiday destination. For starters I for one recommend going to see The Grand Canyon, everybody should see that place.

Careful in Gambia, very nice people, I went for my swim in the Gambian river thinking I was at one with Kunta Kinte only to discover the river is where the poor people take a sh!t.
Been to most places on your list, the European destinations mostly for work so you don't really get to tour the place. Italy is quite big so if you go anywhere there then go to Rome.
Had a thing for african adventures especially safari but everywhere I wanted to go next (Ethiopia and Kenya) had some kind of conflict going on so my mind has gone far east now, especially after going to Thailand last year, it's become the new frontier.
Saying that, if you want to see the modern day equivalent to sodom and Gomorrah, then Thailand's the place....there were time I thought the sky was about to open up and burn this place off the face of the earth. Still, big place so it would be a crime to limit it to seediness.
Egypt is a must.

Gambia is a must especially the Kunta Kinte trek..if it hasn't become too commercialised by now... I also agree with incognito about parts of SE asia... I went into a rightly named club called 'Heart of darkness' once, which is all i could take and even then i left early.. Imagine being a a night club with women who you can't tell if they're men or women..or worse if they are of age....and to see grown men fawn over these women disgusting.. i nearly vomited being there, i felt tainted just see it...yuk!!!

K - yeah that Kunta kinte trek was the living. I made sure I went with some locals as opposed to the organised tour (too many greys) so I could get the real experience. The sad thing for me was looking around me it was like the slave trade happened yesterday, don't know if it was just the remnants or the general history of the place but it was like man, this slavery thing doesn't look like it finished too long ago, made me feel a bit uneasy.
The other thing that watered my eye was visiting a school in the country. Man had my video camera rolling like a tourist and when I opened the door and saw all the little African children trying to get something as simple as an education it dawned on me that I'm on holiday but this isn't tourism. Yeah, had to switch off my camera and step one side to gather my composure.
One thing though, they are well proud of their history, I definitely got the impression they were victims of slavery as opposed to conspirators of it.
Thailand, man every woman was a prostitute and all had semen breath. A lady boy even tried his luck. I told him I don't do lady boys only women, he said it will be ok, because he's had the operation. My eye dem kin out a dutty!!

Apparently all that nastiness in SE Asia is a legacy of the Vietnam war which I heard is another must see place.

If I had the time and opportunity right now. My world tour would be:
South America. Brazil / palmeres/ Bahia/ to see how our people live/ the amazon forest/ Peru to see all those temples and pyramids. Fly from there to New Zealand. Spend a week driving across Australia from East to West. China/ Cambodia/ Sri Lanka. From there to Uganda/ Tanzania/ touch Zimbabwe to see what really a gwan/ Botswana where businesss supposed to be moving/ up to Ghana for the pilgramage to a slave fort/ Skirt Nigeria..by a wide birth and end up in Ethiopia/ catching the night train to Egypt.
Stretch that over 12 months and you'll come back a new man.

Bredda..you know the difference between us and some Europeans, is that they actually do the tour you're talking about..no if's or buts... I'm managing a young lady who is i suspect the same age as you...and in may she will be leaving the UK..
Going to South East Asia..loas, vietnam, Cambodia Thailand, onto New Zealand, South Africa, Botswana, and eastern Africa and then to Zimbabwe, south Africa and finally back home to the USA...
I also manage another BLACK African who spent a year, in S Korea...and is over here for a spell before returning to Azania... she is barely 25.. Yet in comparison many BLACK child have been beyond the Watford Gap... therein lies part of the youth crime problem i think!!!
its a shame!!!

I agree. These whiteys always pissing me off with the places they've been and they aint touch 30 yet much less any older.
While we go to the same old tired Caribbean or god forbid the States. Or increasing Spain and the rest of Europe.
The thing is as I suspect many of us fall into is that by the time we can have the financial luxury to leave work and have a few quid to spend in your pocket travelling/ other responsibilities and priorities take hold. The majority of us if we have family responsibilities have them young..white people having their first child at 35 after travelling the world. A generalisation but true none the less.
But yeah the states and maybe the caribbean is most people's frontier. Worst still North London youths call South London far. Plenty youths cant even negotiate their way around London is the sad fact..

Id like to see Ulhuru in Australia, also known as Ayers Rock, but for one thing im not sure i'll ever be able to handle the flight and two there are more things that can kill you in Oz than any other part of the planet.
Id like to go Ivory Coast or Ghana.
Definately Japan.
Alaska.
Russia.
If I get to do those things before I shuffle off,id be pretty satisfied.
Have done New York a zillion times,Barbados,France,Italy,Germany,Switzerland but there are tons more things I wanna see, could take me a couple of years before I get around to seeing just the stuff I wanna see in the States like Grand Canyon(which everyone I know whose flown over it has told me is life-changing),perversly enough I do actually wanna see Mt Rushmore(im fascinated by that, plus its so iconic),Alaska as ive mentioned,my Mother loved it there and also Las Vegas just for the sheer tackiness of it.
I aint asking for nothing, just open the door and i\'ll take it myself-James Brown.

Ah yes, Thailand. Have I mentioned before that I worked as a researcher-writer for an international travel publication? Among the many Asian countries that I covered was Thailand. It is an interesting place for a male tourist. There, he can be led to believe that the tourist ghettos designed for his pleasure are typical of the entire country. The economically depressed Thai women who work in the sex industry play their parts so well, that the tourist actually believes they enjoy non-mutually gratifying sex with sweaty strangers from foreign countries. The Thai government, desperate to drag their people into the “developed” world, is content to let westerners believe their women are nymphomaniacs, as it lures sex-tourists to the country and stimulates the economy. The goal of the Tourism Association of Thailand can best be described as virtual colonialism, where every man is a conqueror and every woman is his . . . err . . . umh . . . booty, to do with as he pleases. Nonetheless, in spite of signs to the contrary, it should be noted, that the number of Thai women involved in the sex industry is less than 1%. Moreover, the typical Thai woman conducts herself with the highest degree of modesty, particularly around foreign men, for fear that she might be mistaken for the sex workers that are an embarrassment to Thai values. For more on the western illusion regarding Thailand, see Ryan Bishop’s “Night Market,” an excellent read on the history and economic virility of the Thai sex-industry.
Okay, enough on Thailand. Bredder Tukoma’s travel itinerary sounds like the one for me. Maybe one day when my children are older I will do it.
Peace!
