This is the tough question that i don't think has really been discussed on BNV from a BLACK perspective.... The new wave of Eastern European Immigration, is an issue for us, does it affect us... should we be concerned about this current wave..in terms of schooling, business, jobs and education?

lowering the asking price/going rate for construction/housing jobs.....? sounds familiar



same over here.....any trade....Mexicans and south americans will under bid you.....and 90% of the time they will do an excellent job.


You hubby has all the legal papers/certification...he should get jobs and hire new immigrnts to do it...

that's his advantage...he's legal..speaks the language....and is certified...

Vezz... I hear you totally but as a house owner I can also see another sidde to this, I remember 10 years ago trying to get a builder, my bathroom done etc etc... and the White english folk here basically took the living piss... I couldn't even get them to give me an estimate they would promise to come and then not turn up... I even tried to engage a person to do my bathroom Corgi resgistered who lives about 8 door down on the same rd.... The ******* never turn up twice, on the last occassion i rang him he was in the bloody pub when he should have been seeing me..

When I tried to get my kitchen done i went to Curry's, when that joke builder came to price up the job, the joker tried to charge me for everything he could I swear he would charged me for having to open the bloody door if he could...

So what i'm saying in terms of the Building trade is that for too long they basically took the piss with House owners and this one major reason why Eastern Europeans get the work 1. because they will turn up and complete the work [in most cases] and 2. they charge or under cut the high overpriced job the English were charging...

However....

The flip side that many middle class and proffessional people are now finding is that the Eastern Europeans aint just taking the manual jobs they are taking the white collor jobs too now...In psychology, Psychiatry, Admin, medical doctors etc etc even businesses.. i am seeing more and more polish shop spring up in places that wasn't traditionally polish.. and I'm not sure about how this is going to play out when the recession hits hard...as i think it will..

I think the other thing that Vezz touched on that i have first hand experience of is that what i call the new immigrants, and by that i mean Africans, Asians, Eastern Europeans and Kurds etc are playing the welfare benefit game better than those Black & white who were born here... in effect they are getting outplayed in the housing, and benefit stake big time...and I think its only now that many are waking up to this fact!!!

I know of cases where one cultural group are trying to manipulate the system to get a 4 bedroom house, and one family overcrowding their house to get two properties for them and their extended family to live...

But i think the biggest issue that is happening as we speak..is that the issue of race and race discrimination has been sidelined in favour of other agenda's....The BLACK struggle that was for so long prominent in changing this country has all but been wiped from the political agenda.. the issue of racism is no longer at the forefront as it once was... and the agenda is now firmly on muslims, eastern europeans and that agenda... I said this a while back on Ligali..and was dismissed but imo i do think there is a serious danger that African Carribean contingent will be washed out of our traditional enclaves...

I am seeing this in schools, and in services and on the political map...

When ethnic minorities start complaining about other ethnic minorities, all telling them to go back home to where they came from, you know it's all gone pear shaped

hmm actually when Africans start to define themselves in a homogeneous title such as an 'ethnic minority' that is when you have a problem.... I am neither ethnic nor am i a minority except in the eye of those who want to ASSERT their false sense of superiority over others..

The British public as a whole should do more to get jobs. update skills. i am hoping to do at least 2 courses before i am back to work to enable me to get better work.

nothing wrong with working hard. if its worth the money people will pay

the housing thing irks me so badly, because these days unless you are already in social housing you wont get a place. you cant buy a house because no one is giving out mortgages so you pay over the odds for a shoddy place.

but immigrants must not be looked down on for taking opportunities open to them.

Ladyday... I totally agree with on the Job thing, it is quite clear o me that the one think that gave us the edge years ago..ie the willingness to work hard, and go that extra mile to better ourselves is lost in the new generation.... I suspect that if that BBc journo had asked Black teenagers and young men to work in that field he would have gotten a similar response that the white people on the show gave ie..no way are they working for 'slave' wages...

I am hearing more and more that intelligent young black men would rather walk streets than work as we did back in the day...

However whilst i am not advocating looking down upon or attacking newcomers to the UK, I think many of us had better over this idea that we are all the same or that other will view us as all in this together...because that is definately NOT the case... I have nearly been done twice by a specific cultural group [who shall remain nameless] who has lied, and tried to play on my skin colour in order to get their place in the sun... so i don't think we should fool ourselves into thinking that everyone is playing by the same rules they are most definately not!!
