Default Robin Harris - 27-06-08, 04:16 PM

If you came up in the 70's and 80's and liked Robin Harris, you might wanna catch the long awaited doc on his life.

It's on youtube in 8 segments and is real nice, real funny. Brings back the memories.

Robin Harris was the man. RIP.

I've only known of him from House Party and Do The Right Thing, but from what I've seen dude was hilarious.

He was also in Mo' Better but for me, the stand up was the best.
I hadn't thought about Joe Torry in a while till I saw him in this doc. I saw him live a couple of times back in the day, in DC and at Def Comedy when he was hosting.

Nice to see those back in the day comedians again. Now I gotta go home and watch my old VHS tapes again.

I forgot about Mo' Better Blues cos I haven't seen that for YEARS. Some comedians you can tell are just putting on act, but I always got the feeling he was pretty much playing himself in all his movies. He seemed like the kind of guy that would diss a random person for no reason at all like he did with that Jheri curl dude in House Party lol.

I need to check out more of his stand up routines.

That Jheri curl dude in House Party..

LOL.

"Follow the drip, follow the drip..." LOL. I forgot about that. Ain't that jheri curl dude the little fella in Players Club? If he is, he done came up.

Well they got a lot of his stand up on the youtube doc so you best catch it while it's up.

They got a clip from the Spotlight in South Central where he cracks on some officers of the gotdam law...

Yeah,he only really came to my attention when he played Kid's father in those House Party flix, but I understand that he was a bit of a legend. He kinda reminds of one of those guys who works in a barber shop or something, always cracking jokes and just naturally funny, old school style.
It was sad when he died,I think he was only late 30's??,it would have been great to see how his comedy developed.

I aint asking for nothing, just open the door and i\'ll take it myself-James Brown.

Harris' death opened up the window for the entire def jam roster of comedians...

Nobody would have paid attention to any of those guys had Harris been around....

I love bernie mack...but watching house party 2....you realize just how much of a void Robin Harris left...

First time I saw Robin Harris was on that Robert Townsend special too. And my first time seeing Paul Mooney live was at the Apollo during Amateur Night when he was the guest comedian. I remember he had us laughing about white folks and Nut 'n Honey Crunch.

It's true... after watching the whole documentary and seeing all those cats, it's amazing how much comedic talent we had at that time. Literally everybody on there went on to Def Comedy... Martin, Joe Torry, Bernie Mac... and those other comedians featured in so many of those 90's round the way movies.

I think we were lucky to have been there at the time. When I look back at the movies, the music, the house parties, block parties and good times of the late eighties/early nineties, I know I was lucky to be there.

What's interesting too is how white folks 'discover' stuff like this when it's been around for years in the Black community. And then act like they somehow own it.

Here's another cat that I looooooved. Rashid was from East New York and he was a friend of my friend who went to high school with him. He died last December of a heart attack and left three precious little girls. Rashid used to have us rolling for days and may he rest in perpetual peace. He was BK through and through and it broke my heart when I found out he was gone. And at his funeral, though folks were sad, it was strange how everybody walked away with a smile.

I really miss him.
