I know the lovely Madame Butterfly and Miss Nelia are

I'm about to start my teacher training in september after what feels like a lifetime of setbacks and I'm really really excited!

Any other villagers embarking or already embarked on the same journey? I'd love to hear your advice, your experiences, your top tips etc etc

Hi, I'm a secondary school teacher of thirteen years experience....don't normally post much, just browse. Anyway, all the best - we need more black teachers.

I'm a substitute teacher...still deciding whether or not to pursue full-time teaching. I am also beginning adult ESOL tutoring.

Ex-teacher/tutor.. left the profession in 2006.. If you do start are you going the graduate route as there is money there for the taking to make your course a little financially easier..

teacher, right here.

my experience has been unpleasant to say the least. i enjoy my job, infact, i love teaching. its the bull ish that they put you through to get where you need to go. i am not sure if you are here in the states, but keep asking questions.

in new york state you have to take the LAST, ATSW and your area of concentration(thats if you are doing middle/high school), otherwise( i believe you have to take the multi-subject test). Each test is $85-mind you, you have to take at least three of them.

you have to be fingerprinted(cost of around $75-$100).

what made it so challenging was the people you have to deal with to help get you there.

i have been misinformed and led astray by people who did not care to point me to the right direction to where i could follow the prtocols to become a teacher. and you are pretty much just thrown out there to teach. its almost like swimming up stream without a paddle. but, if you perservere, you will come out swinging!

administration can be tough. as long as you do what is required of you, you will have very little problems.

the pay
itisn't so bad. it could be much better, due to all that you have to endure. i enjoy my paid holidays and summers off. i need all that time to recouperate and refresh for the following school year. however, almost each time you increase your education and put more work in, you do get a pay raise.

students

if you are so fortunate, you will get a wonderful group of kid s who want to learn. trust me, they are out there. the kids feed offf you. if you come into the classroom any particular way that the kids don't like or are offended, you will get negative responses and maybe disrespect. i have never had any major problems with any students. i have had a wide spectrum of kids( students with parole officers, students with problems at home, gifted kids, wealthy students, etc.). i treated each student with some type of dignity and i got thre respect i deserve. they just want to know that they matter.

teaching, i love it and i would not change proffesions, at all.
