Hi. I'm new to the forums. After reading the thread entitled 'Europeans acting Black' I got to thinking about who's music is whose if you get my drift.

I figured that certain forms of music might be obvious, ie, blues and jazz originates from Black culture and classical and opera originates from White.

Would any knowledgable people here like to have a go at educating me on this issue? (ie, where does music like disco, techno, garage, house and all that come from?)

As far as I know, your observations are right. But when talking about disco, techno, house, well the all have various origins within "Black" music. Disco iseasy that developed from jazz and easy listening music. So is house.Youngfolks at the time put a spin on Disco music. Discowasfor older folks, it didn't have the kind of"jump" young folks wanted.

But techno/garage? I would think the same thing, but I am not sure.

Disco comes from blacks and has influences of funk, soul music andsalsa, whichalso have their origins in black culture.Techno is a branch of electronic music which originated amongst black Americans in Detroit. House music is also another branch of electronic music which was created by FrankieKnuckles, ablack American living in Chicago. There is some European influence in House music as Knuckles mixed disco and European synthpop together to create the sound.

Here are some links for a more indepth history of the various genres.
