This has got to be said!
I used to listen to Choice FM and regularly buy Pride magazine - not just because they were aimed at the black community in Britain, but because they weregood to hear and read!
But nowadays, I have no reason to listen or read either - Choice FM these days sounds more like Kiss 100FM - so I've started listening to the real thing!
As for Pride magazine, I don't know why I should even be bothered to spend any of my money on that rag - before it talked about issues that really mattered, like mothers who lost their sons to gun violence, and its supplement publication The New Editor also looked at African-Americans who didn't want to support Live 8 - now I have absolutely no reason why I would want to support them!
Choice FM, like Pride magazine, used to looked at issues that matteredwithin the black community (remember the Peace on the Streets campaign?) - now all they try to do is look, and sound like, in the case of Choice FM, like a C or D rated version of Heat!
As with the above, I'd rather get the real thing, and now do buy Heatl, or Aspire magazine instead.
Even Noir magazine has got something better to say. Then again, considering that Sherry Dixon (editorof Pride) and Ivor Etitienne (managing director of Choice FM) have no journalistic qualifications - andthe latter of the two gotsacked by the BBC,perhaps it shouldn't surprise me that they clearly don't know what they're doing!

I agree, and you could also ask your opening question of MTV Base. Although i would suspect that if you were to ask anyone in charge they would tell you that they were not set up aimed specifically at the Black community, and i dare say that the currant person in charge of coice FM would tell you that abouts its present (not its past).
Anyone would think there was no need of any media outlets specifically concerned with Black issues. "Urban culture" seems to have replaced it, in terms of entertainment and real issues concerned with us are seen as invalid or out dated.
YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY OTHER PEOPLES\' OPINION OF YOU!! ;0)

Pretty much agree with both of you. Even to listening more to Kiss now cos I can no longer stand Choice. I do try to tune into Angie LeMar's Talk Shows of a Saturday Morning though - she still manages to discuss issues (when she's around).
MTV Base makes me YAWN!!!!!!!

I'm sorry to say this, but if you want to hear conscious music on the radio, 1xtra does a good job
They are playing 'young, gifted and black' non stop and somehow I can't imagine Choice or any other 'urban' station doing this
I remember 1xtra once had a 7 minute long track which is basically just talking about black history called 'nature of the threat' by Ras Kass and I thought fantastic I could never hear this on Choice or kiss etc

I'll have a look thankyou. It seems like the radiostations are a big part of the problem but to be honest the kids watch Base or Channel U more than they listen to radio nowadays. Someone should do a petition against Channel U. I think they killing more black boys than anything right now. My nephew is banned from watching it

Jesus christ I can't believe what I am hearing. In my opinion Choice fm has been shit for years. It fell off time ago (I do myself tune into angie le mar, and at time DJ 279 the only guy who plays underground hip hop).
1xtra in my opinion ain't shit either. However it depends on what your lokking for. Nature of the threat is a deep tune which is 12 years old. Pirate stations where playing that tune way back.
I suggest you guys pick up Nex Generation Magazine and disregard the rest of the crap. Other magazines of interest include The Whirlwind as MGL suggested, and if you are interested in current affairs in the mother land New African Magazine.
On the pirate stations thread I posted a list of black community radio stations which have talk shows of interest. The list shows all the shows that are on daily. If you cannot find this list send me a PM and I will send it to you.

I don't read nor listen to the British Black commercial media, just don't trust it.
