Yes brudda Tukoma, i HATE the work 'blick'. If im not mistaken and blind, there are a whole heap of continental african women that bleach their skin, because its 'ugly' to be 'black'. Wont do as well, less attractive, by whom...Hmmm. Its another westernised practice and view that being like, looking and loving ne another is not a good thing as we are inferior to everybody.
When a fool it told a proverb, its meaning has to be explained to him.

By the way i am JAMAICAN. JAMIACANS are probably one of the most rooted caribbean countries out of them all that identifies with their african culture. I disagree with you totally. There are a few that may say that, that you know of that are in AMERICA, many may have indian ancestor, but not mosgt, the majority of jamiacns are of AFRICAN decent and as suprising as some people may find are NOT mixed as some may assume. The mixed population in JA is very small. Like i said the population is still about 97%..probably more african. Also, as people can assume that jamaicans have lost this that and theother in traditions,, Kumina, Jonkunuu, kananga water, traditional stories and peoms, festivals etc are still as common as ever in jamaica and i dont think they can ever go away.HHHotep i think you misunderstood what i was talking about a little and took it out of context.

Ok, but I've not seen that from Jamaicans, whether in the US or the Caribbean. In fact, wasn't last year the biggest selling year for skin bleaching creme in Jamaica OF ALL TIMES?

It's going to be a mixed bag wherever you go. Some Jamaicans are indeed deeply rooted in their heritage, and many are not. Same with American Blacks, but the only Diasporan Blacks to use the term "Afrikan" as a name are AFRIKAN AMERICANS. We all have a long way to go.

Hanny your not wrong. To focus on one particular place on the talk of one individual is not the common sense way to look at things. After all/ all Africans have their issues..we could talk about the Nword prevalence in America for example and come to the conclusion and lament on the state of conciousness over there. Maybe Shemsi feels that because Africans are the majorityin JA they areimmune to the samementality his people fail to. But he still didnt answer me whether that the common view he gets from all Jamaicans/ or just that girl.

Yes its factually true what you say. However I feel its down to the numbers game and the relative positions in each society for the African. Eg. in Jamiaca no-one refers to an African Jamaican (even if 100% were comfortable with the term)or even black Jamaican because its assumed that you are talking about the majority. But you will clarify a "white" Jamaican/ Chinese Jamaican/ Indian Jamaican etc. or any other prefix simply because the majority phenotype is the standard bearer in the mind and to avoid confusion.
I sure you get my point if we talk about America. If someone refers to an American a white man is the first image in the mind. Unless its qualified somehow by some prefix or suffix. Even with the 40 million of you its still a minority percentage in that country.
Hence its only natural that you would be the first (and maybe the only) tostandardise the term. My theory holds for South America as well. But the dynamics of the Carribean in which national identities have been formed there hasnt been the same political and historical drive for self identification. Even though we both suffer from the same historical amnesia.

Something really an noysme wheb it comes to that quote. Is that some IGNANT jamaicans will try and emphesis the MANY PEOPLE as a means to impress, or be more liberal (those 'liberal' fake rasta that make it an excuse to be with soem white wonmen, but anyhooo)! That came from the africans in jamaica taht came together as a nation, formed a common language and combined african culture. Yes there are some chinese, indian copule white people in jamaica, but that dies not take away the fact that the african population is still about 97%.

Hear, hear! I have not had good experiences with Jamaicans here in the US. All of them have claimed to be "East Indian"...standing up there looking 6 shades blacker than me and with nappier hair than any Afrikan American I can think of, but yet they are somehow "Indian". None of these "Indians" has been to the real India, though. Otherwise they'd know what their Indian "brothers and sisters" truly think of their black ass.
Jamaicans deny their Afrikan heritage for the same reasons that Afrikan Americans, Afro -Brittish, etc deny our Afrikan heritage. It has become a sore spot and a source of pain and shame. But that is because many of us believe the lies and white propoganda (and some ignorant Black propoganda as well) and ALLOW others to make us hate ourselves. It's a sick cycle. Afrikan Americans claim to be everything from Cherokee (and we see what they think of you...voted your black asses out of the tribe LOL) to French, Irish, German, etc...anything but Black. You should see the reactions I get from Afrikan Americans, both male and female when I say that I love women with natural hair. Some brothers I know teased me for months because I picked a brown-skinned woman with natural hair over a yellow woman with "good" hair. excuse me for my ignorance, but just what exactly is good hair.. can you please enlighten me, We can do better. We've got to do better, people!

From what I'm reading on this girl, it to me seems like she's not always been appreciated looks wise from her own black people in the carribean. Some blacks do build a anomosity to their own people because of being broken down most of their life from being called 'too dark' 'too nappy' blah blah blah... That's what it seems to me with this girl, and the whole afro thing at her friends house. SAD. I think her mentality stems from those type of things. I've seen it soooo many times. Blacks who become hateful and ignorant of their own people because they were never appreciated and always teased to be light skinned, and have that (hate this word) 'good hair' ! .... What ends up happening is they themselves end up falling into that mentality and living their life that way then end up being idiots themselves
