Working in an office for the first time... -
19-12-07, 03:28 PM
For the past several weeks I have been working in an office temping for the first time in my life as previously I was lucky enough to work from home.
OMG
I have to say this with out being prejudice, however I have found that white people have the most disgusting sanitation habits I have ever seen in my life. I always knew they had different habits...but in de work is so diferent.
When they ask do I want a 'brew' I say no thanks, but they take this as me being stuck up!! But if you see the state of those mugs and how they clean them….one gyal cleans her mug in the nasty work bathroom...begs belief!!
I don’t know if any of you notice this but people of colour really change in a place of work where white people are the majority, why can't they be themselves, rather than be what they want you to be?! Now that the xmas season is upon us these people are behaving in ways that are unacceptable, office people havin sex in de bathroom.
Pakistanis/indians - are the biggest arse lickers ever, they do it so blatantly that it makes you feel sick!!
Blacks - why do some black people act whiter than de white they tryin to copy? Simple question...
Gays at work - they are totally disgusting in every way possible.
What is the best way to survive in these places???
Any comments welcome
Ms P

So you got problems with the white people, problems with the black people, problems with the Asians, problems with the gays.....
Did you meet anyone you liked or got on with? If you didn't and that's important to you, I'd say avoid office work. You don't have to be best buddies with your colleagues, but you seem overwhelmed by them. Not a good sign, which in truth has as much to do with you as them.
Mind your wants, 'cos somebody wants your mind

I said it's to do with you because of what you wrote - it was all about the negatives you could see. I'm not saying you're not right about the people, but if it occupies your mind that much here or any other office you work in, it's always gonna be a struggle.
The people around you may never change - all you can do is find a way of relating to them that suits you, which is primarily about you rather than them.

Not gonna get on the race tip as we all know the score but I will jump on the gay issue
worked with a bisexual dude (gay in my book) who used to say the most discusting things to me and for some reason it was considerd ok cos he was gay so he could do no harm..
needless to say I ended up giving him a sneaky dig after he crossed the line with me and we sorted it old school style.

Only the best is good enough....

May as well see it as a test. It took me a while to learn but the bullying, hierarchies, groups etc from school never ends.
You're just gonna have to figure out how to handle them.

why do people always expect black people to act in a specific way? we are not robots
this is a typical office scenario, welcome to a new mini-world

Lol that was funny. Man u need to come work in my office, u'll have the most fun. We got mobile phones ringing off the chain with the most ghetto ringtones: "my bitches get money" and "soulja boy". We got online game competitions going on, who can throw a paper aeroplane the farthest. My boss is as white as they come I got her chowing down on plaintain, dumpling and festival. I do my trademark strollin in late after 10am and leave at 5pm still getting paid for 7hrs. We just had our christmas do on a boat in london, when the bangra music came on the toppa top boss was in the middle of the dance floor bussin moves, yes he is asian and proud of it. He gave me and a friend £40 each to catch a cab home, just took it out his wallet like it weren't nothing, we could have been scammin him big time. Truss me there ain't no conformin of any kind in my workplace, and believe it or not I'm only temping there too!

If your skirt is short enough, you can come and work in my office (I like leather boots too). Give me a ring during office hours: 020 7983 4100.

As far as you get the work done and meet your objectives with reason if not flag it up with the boss..after that you can more or less get away with anything
one will need a bigger lie to cover the first one

i dont know what it is about office environments but it seem to bring out the demon in some people.
i worked in an office for a few years and bwoy did di demons come out to play, i worked with one woman, who must just have been let out of mi nuh know, she was so two faced, she used to run people down to me and the next minute she was all over the people she was running down, she used to try to get me into trouble with others, by asking my opinion on things then putting her twist on it and then telling someone else, that me and she thinks.....
i soon caught on to what she was doing so told the others if you do not hear it come out of fe me mouth then......she was a very clever but nasty piece of work.
the amount of bitching and backstabbing, was so stupid and it frustrated them that i kept myself out of it(sometimes)
then there was de cook, all i can say is the only time i eat out of that place was on the first day BEFORE i went into the kitchen, just picture a uncooked chicken in the sink full of dutty dishes and a ciggie butt on the window sill - and that was when the kitchen was clean torarted!!
the amount of scams that they had running up in there(allegedly)
all that been said i have had some good days there and a few laughs

I'm interested in knowing if by acting "white" she means acting PROFESSIONALLY. If so, then that makes me wonder why it's thought that black people cannot act professionally without being thought of as coconuts? I'm sure many of those white people you're working with (their disgusting habits aside) do not have the same persona in the office as they do at home or in social settings, so why would you expect people of color to kick back and "act black?" in a professional setting?

I doubt it very much....she no doubt seems to be talking about those who kiss azz or those that laugh at every joke even though its not funny or always at the pub after work seeking favours...some of this bull is uneccesary just do your work and be on top of your game and most of all cover your back the office can be a bitchy place indeed...office environs might help you develop socially apart from that wouldn't recommend long term
